Title: Bitcoin.exe does nothing
Post by: MosquitoMan on June 02, 2011, 03:09:32 PM
I'm sure this has been posted before, but whenever I start bitcoin.exe my mouse icon changes to the thinking icon and then 15 seconds later nothing happens.  I don't get a bitcoin window, I do however have a bitcoin.exe process running under Task Manager.  Because of this I have no wallet on my computer and am forced to use an online service until I figure this out.

When I try using bitcoind.exe (not sure what the difference is?) I see a cmdpromt window open but then I get an error "The procedure entry point BIO_new_mem_buf could not be located in the dynamic link library libeay32.dll"

I have tried uninstalling, deleting all files, then reinstalling a couple times and no luck.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Please help! :D

bitcoind.exe won't show a window. It is a cut down version of bitcoin.exe which is for use with a server.

Anyway are you perhaps getting a coin icon in your system tray? Just saying, it might be starting minimized.

Just be patient... At least on my computer it takes quite a while for the window to pop up, I assume the client is faffing around with the database before opening the GUI.

I can let my computer sit all day and the bitcoin program will never load up, just the process in the task manager.

What antivirus are you using? Could you try temporarily turning it off and then starting Bitcoin?

I'm not using any antivirus program right now.

I am using Windows Firewall.  It's on the exception list but I suppose I could try running bitcoin with that disabled.  It's worth a shot I suppose.

Try backing up your wallet.dat (%AppData%\Bitcoin\wallet.dat) file and erasing the Bitcoin directory and trying again. Also, check your Event Viewer to see if anything suspicious pops up in there related to BitCoin.exe.

Sounds like something is wrong with the program it self. Like the poster above said back up your wallet data file and uninstall. The make sure all the directories which could hold bitcoin data (except the wallet) are deleted. Then re-install the app.

There is no wallet file created, nor has their ever been.  I've tried uninstalling, deleting all related files, then re-installing a couple of times.  Still not working.  Makes me very sad :(

Do this.

I couldn't find any evidence of anything bitcoin-related in the Event Viewer.

Later today I'll probably install Ubuntu on another hard drive and just use bitcoin under linux.  At least I'll have a local wallet then.

MosquitoMan,

Try right clicking on the bitcoin launcher in the programs->bitcoin menu option.
select Run As Administrator.
that should work for you.

if you have a desktop short cut you can select run as administrator by right clicking on the short cut selecting properties and making the selection to run as admin there too.

Good Luck.
