Norway is a very rich Nation, lot's of oil. But we're weakening our military forces every year.

When the cold war lasted, we built millitary bunkers to protect in the event of an attack from Russia.

Now, there is no cold war, and we had the following two options:

1. Do nothing. Total cost = 0
2. Demolish all the bunkers. Total cost = 9 mill USD, but since governmental spending always ends up bigger than estimated, we should say 12 mill USD.

I think this is a great way of the politicians to spend money, demolishing old bunkers that can be useful even in 50 years with zero maintenance is certainly
a better way of spending money than ensuring that local roads are holding a good standard, and that schools have a healthy indoor climate, and that hospitals
doesn't kill patients by malpractise and that the eldery gets proper care.

I can feel that the love for politicians only increase when I see all the wise decisions they make, and how well they spent the taxpayers money.

It's also great, as in the event of a russion invation, we can just lie down on our backs, waiving a white flag, and spend 0 on warfare!

Do you think there is a real threat of Russian invasion of Norway? What is the common view amongst Norwegians?

At the moment no. What about in 5 years, 10 years or say in 30 years? We have no guarantee that the situation will
not change for the worse. Russian Millitary are regularily flying aircrafts over our country to see how we respond.

Point is, if you demolish these bunkers now, you'd have to build new ones (which takes time) if the threat raise again,
the other alternative is to just keep them, just in case. The official that oversee them now stated they would cost 0
money to keep as is for the next decades, as long as they're not used.

I think we should plan for the long term. In the event we'd need the bunkers quckly, they would simply not exist anymore,
it would take time to build new ones, and as long as they're not used and doesn't cost much if anything to keep, I don't
see the need to demolish them.

As for the general consenus, I don't think most people are worried about a war with Russia, ie. they would be worried if it happened,
but we're not afraid it will happen anytime soon.

Well as Norway's got plenty of oil it should be in a good bargaining position with all the biggest economies if/when this peak-oil energy crisis a lot of people are predicting starts to take effect.

I agree the bunkers should be re-purposed though, what a waste! There is an old Bunker system near where I live, originally an Ammunitions factory/store. I had a tour round it a couple of years ago when I was looking for somewhere to build a soundstage, the problem was that the army now use it for live ammo training and we were warned that the SAS could burst in any time without warning.

Although I had the feeling my leg was being pulled a little, I passed on the opportunity because my work involves recording choirs, and some choristers are quite old and might not survive the fright!

Yeah, I just tought of how norway has a lot of heavy metall bands, exporting the music to all of the world. Such bunkers far from people, must be the ideal place for such bands to exercise. Hehe.

You could concrete them in to stop all your old churches getting burned down ;P
