Title: Similar Usernames Attempting To Scam - Defaults Please Tag
Post by: Tigggger on August 08, 2015, 07:06:10 PM
Not a request to do something about it at an admin level, I appreciate it's a losing battle, more an idea for a helpful thread to report them so people on default trust can watch the thread and tag them.

If they post in a thread then the option is there to report to a moderator which I would do, same with PM's but often I see a post where a user says they have received one, they may or may not have reported it so as a just in case.  I could leave trust but given the forums default being to hide untrusted feedback there's not much point.

I nuke them when I see them.

Probably all by the same person. Probably a waste of time for them any way as I doubt anyone will fall for it with the PM warnings.

Just seen this post and I searched for someone intended to be me, and found this 'el kaka33': https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=522174
Though this user have no posts and is not active, the user is still attempted to impersonate me.

I just wanna be on record in stating that I did not create this account to fuck with anybody. That said, who in their right mind would hate a Gleb. HAHAHA OTOH, a retard like Leroy Fodor would possible consider such action. HAHAHA

Come to think of it, the dude has serious mental issues given that he opted to choose a moniker he loathes. That's fucked up on so many levels. HAHAHA

It's funny how these socks quickly find their way to this thread.

Thanks Mitchell, I see that as one of the biggest risks is in the Marketplace Forums. Ive done many trades, selling equipment, also buying, many times with no escrow-- based on my Trust score. So was really surprised when the buyer/user said that they were contacted by the imposter account - looking to "close the deal".

Glad no one ended up falling for it- and from now on will add a disclaimer regarding this, to make sure buyers are making sure all PMs are from my account and not someone else.

Usernames with Os and 0s Is and ls are especially at risk.

Thanks again!

Ehhh, I think giving negative trust based on avatar pictures may be a bit of a stretch. There are a fairly good number of avatars that are shared between a large number of users.

In addition to the above, it is fairly clear that he is protesting a viewpoint/stance of yours, and while I do not know the merits of his protest, I don't think anyone should fear getting negative trust simply because they speak out against someone.

With the above being said, it looks like that is probably a hacked account regardless, and has existing negative trust.

You're right. Emotional reaction. I have removed my trust rating as it may sound retaliatory and that wasn't my intention.

Why are there so many bitmain impersonators? Why not a staff member like Cyrus, Hilarious, Mitchell, Lauda, etc? Or even a trusted escrowed, so they can make a fake escrow trade?

An escrow trade would be much harder to fake, it involves fooling at least two parties. Fake Bitmain account can just post a Bitcoin address or post a link to a fake site and hope to catch someone.

Why are there so many bitmain impersonators? Why not a staff member like Cyrus, Hilarious, Mitchell, Lauda, etc? Or even a trusted escrowed, so they can make a fake escrow trade?

Because we're not selling anything. They usually try impersonate people who are trying to sell something by PMing people who have shown interest or bidded on something. If I started trying to sell some goods then you can bet there will be someone trying to scam this way.

You'd be suprised. Someone got nabbed last month for 1btc by sending it to someone named "sidehack `" https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=564701 trying to impersonate the actual  sidehack https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=130792

It must work about once out of every hundred tries so obviously worth doing to some.

What is the story behind all this to try and acting like someone else, it is not hard to see the difference in the nicknames?!

When people click on his nick they will notice the post number is below the  one from a real legendary ranked member.

And it would be for sure be a nice idea if this topic could be pinned or maybe be included in the red warning message that is send by default in newbie accou nt messages, maybe it will help to stop it or at least to make thw users to check this topic!
