Title: Making money off of internet bandwidth
Post by: notlist3d on August 17, 2015, 04:22:40 PM
I should be going up from 50 Mbps to 1000 Mbps later this week if install goes well.  Should know this week hopefully.

Is there any way's anyone is making money off their extra bandwidth?  Just wondering if there is a way to monetize it if I do get the install later this week.

I can't really think of anything other than downloading things for people. Maybe you could advertise that as a service or set up some sort of mini internet cafe lol.

in any case the earning would be abysmally low, not worth it, it should be better for you to sell it privately to some one that may need it seriously

i expect a bigger reward if sold in this way

Aren't there some alts that will let you share your bandwidth and in that way you would earn momey. Seems to me like I read something like this, but not sure where and what. I've been reading a lot of different threads lately! :)

This should allow you to hit the faucets faster!

But Amph is right, the payments would be really low. If there were an established way to earn bitcoin by bandwith a lot of people would be doing it already. SO...if you figure out a way, tell a few of us here (because we're helping you with your question) and then figure out a system for enrolling others to earn money using bandwith in a way that gets you a piece of their action...that's how you really make money, by making money off of others. That's how all corporations do it.

I open a letter from ISP that they want to compete with google fiber :).  But you have to have fiber laid out to where you live then cat-5 going from it to the modem. They put the fiber to house for free. I believe when new portion of house was built there might have been charge on cat-5 from fiber to modem I am not sure. So I guess biggest part is you need fiber not just a phone line like normal dsl.

So they offer a great deal and I go up to 1000 Mbps for 10 more dollars then I was paying.  Yes i know insane good deal.   It is not like most ISP's as it is really owned by it's users  ( a Co-Op).  No you will not find many ISP's like this but I am lucky.

It is just an insane amount of bandwidth I tried to think of way to legally monetize it but have not found good one yet.  On a side note it is going to cost me a decent chunk on a new router my old router goes up to around 750 Mbps, but I am going to purchase one that does closer to the 1000 Mbps.   They offer one from the ISP, but I like owning my own router.

I'd wait till it's actually installed before you get excited about the upgrade. I've been twice upgraded for free promising double the speed etc but the actual speed was actually no where near what they offered.

a few years ago there were certain private bittorrent trackers looking to reward you if you're a high speed (1gb/s +) content uploader. don't know if they still doing it, but you can search through them to find out.

I don't know if I would trust any third party's utilizing my bandwidth. No telling what they are going to be doing with it, especially if it involves uploading, downloading, or transferring of files. If the content is illegal, you will be held liable as well. Not worth the risk for the minimal amount of money you might make off of it, imho.

the only way I see you doing this for money would be, becoming a hosting source.

so for example you let your neighbor pay basically your internet bill. So you have free internet as long the person pays, but you would have to compare on if that persons rate.

or the different approach where you download stuff for people? I dont know.. how well that sounds. Unless people are that super busy to need as service like that.

That is the issue is the "legal" part of making money off of it.   I don't want to host files as I do not want "bad" things to be shared from my connection.  Not interested in doing torrents as sadly most are not legal files being shared.  So no I would not be doing this.

It is unique with it being a co-op as technically it's users own it.  I believe I can use the bandwidth as far as TOS, depending on what it is.

I just have not found a good legal idea yet.  Fileshare is for sure out though.   I don't want to have to monitor legality of use.

I know youre probably thinking of  a smaller scale.

But why not just open up or hire a website guy, and launch your own VPN service and resell it from using amazons services.

Problem again comes to legality.  I do not want to be a part of something possibly illegal.  With a VPN I risk someone doing something illegal with my internet conection.

This is part of why I had trouble thinking of idea is problem with being legal.

The speed shouldn't affect the speed of the faucets. As every faucet records time serverside, they would only allow you to hit the faucet again after a specific time frame, internet speed shouldn't matter. If loading time is a factor, 50mbps is quite enough for a webpage to load within seconds. Still, faucets are never a good idea.

That simply isn't an option. Your neighbours aren't stupid, internet speed decreases with wifi range. The WIFI signal is unlikely to penetrate through the walls. Even if they want internet, they wouldn't bother asking you for it. They would just subscribe to a new connection themselves and less hassle if something happens to the router. Another problem is the security aspect. By allowing a third party into your internet connection, MITM could potentially occur.

I am interested to know if you have found a way to use your extra bandwidth yet. can you share your findings with the rest of us too.
