Title: Mining with 5970 and 6850 in the same machine (linux) [Resolved] Post by: lbeckm3 on October 05, 2012, 03:19:34 PM Ok, pretty much banging my head against a wall here! I started with this under Ubuntu Linux;
Card: 6850 Miner: Phoenix 1.6 Vid driver: 12.1 SDK: 2.1 Then I got a 5970 and had to switch things up, currently have; Card: 5970 Miner: cgminer Vid driver: 11.1 SDK: 2.5 Took some head scratching etc to get that working - main issue is one of the cores on the 5970 is bad!! cgminer works fine on the one at around 330mh. Thinking of getting return through the seller/Dell but not sure how to prove the other core is bad (all testing I did on XP with it shows it works fine - benchmarks etc.). Anyway back to the issue at hand, I tossed in the 6850 and tried to start up cgminer with -d 2 to hit the 6850 and it doesn't exist, I get; cgminer -o <mining pool url> -u <myuser> -p <mypass> -d 2 -D [2012-10-05 10:14:57] Started cgminer 2.7.6 [2012-10-05 10:14:58] CL Platform 0 vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. What am I missing here? Thanks!!! -Lyle Title: Re: Mining with 5970 and 6850 in the same machine (linux) Post by: crazyates on October 05, 2012, 03:33:49 PM Are you really using driver 11.1 with SDK 2.5? Update your driver.

Ok I tried 12.1 and same result. 12.4 and SDK 2.5 segfaults Now on SDK 2.6 and 12.4 (8.963) and get this on 5970; [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error [2012-10-05 11:08:40] OCL NONCE 0 found in slot 11158 [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error [2012-10-05 11:08:40] OCL NONCE 0 found in slot 11159 [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error [2012-10-05 11:08:40] OCL NONCE 0 found in slot 11160 [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error [2012-10-05 11:08:40] OCL NONCE 0 found in slot 11161 [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error [2012-10-05 11:08:40] OCL NONCE 0 found in slot 11162 [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error [2012-10-05 11:08:40] OCL NONCE 0 found in slot 11163 [2012-10-05 11:08:40] GPU0: invalid nonce - HW error probably due to the one bad core? Or try: Catalyst 11.11. you should indeed use SDK 2.5, which is included in. follow the next steps to install this driver after you removed the old one: •sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms execstack dh-modaliases fakeroot libqtgui4 •sudo apt-get install ia32-libs-multiarch:i386 lib32gcc1 libc6-i386 •sudo apt-get install ia32-libs •wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-11-x86.x86_64.run •sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-11-11-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise (takes a few minutes) •sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb then the steps i send u before starting with aticonfig Gl Title: Re: Mining with 5970 and 6850 in the same machine (linux) Post by: QuantumFoam on October 08, 2012, 01:00:53 AM Check your xorg.conf (usually in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and verify the bus ids match up correctly with what's listed in aticonfig --lsa. It's been my experience that sometimes aticonfig --adapter=all --initial doesn't get the xorg.conf right on the first go. Whenever I've had problems with cgminer not picking up one of my cards for whatever reason, it's always been a mismatch in xorg.conf.
Title: Re: Mining with 5970 and 6850 in the same machine (linux) Post by: -ck on October 08, 2012, 11:05:04 AM If you're reconfiguring xorg.conf with aticonfig, it tries to add to your existing config normally unless you use the force parameter. Since you're reconfiguring everything from scratch effectively, I recommend
Code: sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f Title: Re: Mining with 5970 and 6850 in the same machine (linux) Post by: lbeckm3 on October 10, 2012, 07:25:13 PM Well, I have tried all the suggestions here and still zip! I do see an issue with compiling the video drivers (I'm on lucid fyi), but I'm giving up. This system is pretty old, running an old Asrock motherboard and thought I had the magic solution when I remembered there was a little "memory chip" type thing for enabling x16 in one direction, or if I flip it over it configures the two PCIe slots as x8/x8. Alas, no, that didn't do it either. So bottom line, I'm going to move the darn 6850 to a different machine and use it over there. Sort of sucks as that's a bunch more in the way of power draw to keep another system up, but oh well.
I REALLY APPRECIATE all the responses - kudos to everyone that has tried to help me thus far, you all have been great!! Wish I had more time to play and get it going but I have too many other time commitments. Thanks!! -Lyle Title: Re: Mining with 5970 and 6850 in the same machine (linux) [Resolved] Post by: Gatorhex on October 13, 2012, 02:25:21 AM Did u try GUIMiner?
Did you do something stupid like connecting them with a crossfire link? (59xx & 68xx are not compatible) I run a Bart and Cypress system, no crossfire, running two instances of GUIMiner. No I haven't tried GUIMiner as of yet. For some reason I thought that was windows only, but does look like there is a linux version. I'll give it a try! I didn't do any crossfire with it, although I did flip over a little "memory stick" looking thing on my MB that converts the two PCIe expansion cards to 8x/8x from (I'm guessing here) 1x/16x. I did just go through and update from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 figuring what the heck, nothing to lose (only upgrade borked up and I had to install from scratch - very glad I tar'd off my /home directory to another server so my wallet etc etc came back fine! Thanks for the suggestions - I'll try them and update this thread when I do.
