Title: A few questions
Post by: L1240erion on August 20, 2015, 04:07:05 AM
I just wanted to know a little about securities and if they might be able to help my upcoming project.

I am an indie filmmaker, my team is about to make our first feature film. We already have a fair portion of the money. But we were looking at new avenues for raising the last bit of money we need. We don't want to simply do a kickstarter-like thing. We really want to give people an opportunity to make some profit with us. I have been a bitcoin user for a long time, I even have a lot of securities on various platforms. I am not super technical when it comes to this stuff, but I am curious about selling a portion of our film via bitcoin or a security-like thing. I was wondering if there was a good way to do this through this community? Are their legal barriers? What would be the best place to do this? Is it a bad idea all around?

Thanks for any help at all.

There are definitely legal barriers. Kickstarter, gofundme, etc offer rewards/product instead of profits to help avoid that stuff.

Figure out the laws before you do anything, especially if serious money is on the line.

My other piece of advice would be to be EXPLICITLY clear as to what people are paying for and how they will be getting paid back, especially with regard to the change in bitcoin price over time. If I give you 1 btc am i giving you 1 btc or $233, what are you going to give me back if bitcoins are worth 233 at the end? What if the price is 10 cents? 10k?

Yeah for a project like that, I would stick to traditional crowdfunding like Kickstarter or Indiegogo.
Though, if you are prepared to take some risk, you could fund a small portion through Bitcoin.

Check out some Bitcoin crowdfunding websites or maybe Bitjam.

You might want to consider your distribution. Blockchain offers the ability to transfer ownership of digital property via services like ascribe.io. This would not raise funds but would for sure reduce your distro budget. Also protect your IP
