Yep, I've seen someone got 50 BTC lost to a brain wallet with blank passphrase and the coins don't got returned...

For me, I will send 90% of the amount back and keep 10% of that (5 BTC) as my commission and rewards ;D

BTW I have once sold something unsuccessfully and I've return all BTC to the buyer (with tx fee deducted).

Don't "refund". You don't know if the BTC you're blindly "refunding" will actually be going to the legitimate owner.

Also, if it wasn't a mistaken send to your address (in which case, someone will probably be posting a "lost my BTC" thread on this forum or /r/bitcoin about it), it's likely your wallet has a crap PRNG, so you shouldn't send it to any other address generated by that wallet, you should copy/paste an address from another wallet of yours, ideally on a different device, and send the BTC to yourself. Then watch for a "lost my BTC" thread to appear on the aforementioned places. Whoever legitimately owned the BTC should be able to send you a random string of text (that you give them) signed with their sending key(s) AND the same key you collided with due to the crap PRNG.

The chances that it was a random error/typing error/etc are virtually nil.  It would have to be someone who knows you/has transacted with you/etc.  So, be nice to the people you know and return it. :)

Or they'd had your address in their clipboard, randomly putting them into bc.i, but they didn't immediately recognize it when pasting, and they freak out after the erroneous send, and post a thread. Pretty sure this has happened at least a few times before. Google isn't 100% either.

That used to happen all the time back in the day - but before my time.

Just post on forums and ask if anyone transferred a bunch of bitcoins to the wrong address. Do not mention how much it was and what the address was. Ask that person to send you a PM to discuss the matter.
If you find a likely candidate, ask him to send a small amount to the address again, to prove that it was his bitcoin address. Then transfer the money back to him or her.

I would do that, if I find someone's wallet or credit card on the street. And I have done that before and received a handsome reward for it.

You would want other people to do the same, if it was you. Right?  

right move. Conscience you well, What if the owner earned it for a long time and 50btc is very hard to earn. I would do the same..

diversify. I'd take half of it and invest in 2-3 projects I care about and would go on a little shopping spree with the rest. :)

I would wait that this person contacts me and then I would return him 90% while I would keep 10% as a prize money. I wouldn't send anything back automatically, since you never know what exactly happened and if someone has made an honest mistake and wants his money back, I am sure he would make an effort and contact me in order to get his money back.

It is easy to say "I would send it back of course" as long as it is just theory.
In practice the case is very often the real opposite.A person who is in really need of that money will very likely keep it and not say any word. A person who doesn't who have to care financially might send it back.But maybe he is a greedy a**hole and keeps it as well.

I can invest those 50 Bitcoins in my Business and after one month I can send 1 BTC and ask what happened? in my message.  If I get response, I will refund remaining 49 BTC. (Earnings from my business is my profit).

I would lend it on loans. Basically I will try to gain more bitcoins with those 50btcs. And then will roll them again and again till the bitcoin prices reaches $500 and will sell them off then.  ;D ;D

How's he going to contact you? All he has is your address.

Only way I can think is if he sends you another small amount via blockchain and leave an email address as a message/comment on that transaction. But he then has to hope that you actually go there to see such message. There is no other way to contact somebody that I know off.

There is basically no chance in hell he could write the adress wrong and it go to another adress unless he did it purpose so what I will do with those coins is what I usually do with my coins ;D which is hold , hold and hold till it BTC reach a GOOD amount then Iwithraw

Geeez I have to go with you on that.. I have seen too many people keeping stolen things or money they have received from some dodgy source, just to lose it all after a while.

That might be the life savings of someone and he or she might commit suicide, if they lost their life earnings or all the savings from a startup business or a charity.

That said, if that money came from a wallet with say 100 000 coins, I would send a small transaction back, with a little note and negotiate some terms for a payback. ;->

That is truly a interesting question. I would not really refund right away to the address which sent me this, because it may also be an exchange's address which a client used to send me. I would simply open up a thread and ask the sender to pop up and provide enough details to convince me, if he is able to do so, I will happily hand over him the amount.

I too would hodl 'em. But I'd probably send them through a mixing service first just in case they are following the trail.

When that time comes even it's impossible my conscience will decide what's good for a worst or bad for a better.

Well if i find 50Btc on my wallet i will do:

1. Throw a big party with girls
2. Throw a after party with even more girls
3. Give back 25Btc to who given to me with a link to the photo of the girls that were present at the party (because 25Btc can be used for personal things + party + girls)

With few exceptions I give out unique addresses for each payer. If I found an unexpected 50 BTC in my wallet I would contact the payer to whom I had previously give out the address to. If he/she does not know anything about it, I will keep the 50 BTC!

If i found 50BTC on my wallet the first thing i will do is to go to the fridge and drink a cold beer, maybe later i will try to contact with the guy throw a new transaction ( with a message ) or something like that, dunno, but ofc i will ask at least for a compensation.

Thats at least what i would like that someone do if this happen to me.

Try to at least see if you can contact the sender in the first instance as it is quite a substantial amount, even if it were 1 BTC it would be right to try to reach out to them, if you have no luck then I suppose you could just keep it there on the off chance that they will realise what has happened and then reach out to you at some point.

Yes, this is one of those 'transacted with you/etc.' options.  The point is, they know who you are.

Or they were snooping on you, trying to track down your sock puppet accounts by linking public addresses of other accounts, in order to fill their imaginary neg rep quota for the day. In which case I'd say - they damn well deserve to lose those 50 coins.

As a related question (but with slightly different options and outcomes), if you found 25 or 50 BTC in your wallet suddenly and it was a coinbase transaction with no details such as coinbase text that specify who mined it, what would you do?

I'd keep it unless they contacted me to try get it back and if they sent it in error you can be sure they will. How do you know they haven't sent it to you as a gift for some reason? Sure, unlikely but so is getting a random 50btc.

At that time, the block reward was 50 BTC.

I would have to give it to charity, that which you have not earned is not yours to keep is what my grandpa always said. It has kind of stuck with me.

Return all the money would be the most honest and fairest thing to do.
Perhaps someone thinks that it would be stupid to do something like this but I could not spend money that is not mine.

i would go on the forums and see if somebody accidentally sent out 50btc to a wrong address. if someone did I'd contact them and after verification send them back 49 Btc. Gotta keep 1 for my troubles  ;D

I'd definitely move the coins to a safer, offline address and post about it here, on reddit, vout and phez and try to find the owner. As said before, it's not a good practice to just send the coins back.

This is funny because today I had a dream where I received like 7 BTC with some weird, random signed messages written on the transactions. The transactions where something like 1 BTC, 1 BTC, 3 BTC, 2 BTC, and every transaction had a message, I don't exactly remember what the messages said, but I remember being happy when I opened my wallet and my balance was 7+ BTC up out of nowhere, then I woke up. It felt so real that i had to check my own wallet, sadly looking as empty as always.

i remember that saomething like this happened two times already one time with a member here he opened a thread about it, and the other time with cryptsy, one user has accidentally withdrawn 60 btc due to a bug, in both case they were sent back to the owner

That is the right thing to do, but I believe it would be really very difficult to find the real sender who has sent to your address, so without assuring or confirming it would be very risky to send it to any random address, so unless If I'm not confirmed I would not send it to any random address, I would keep it safe in my wallet.

Yup...many people would try to scam the finder out of that 50BTC :)

I'm a miner so something similar happens every once in a while. As one of those "Crazy Christians" I'd have to sell off BTC5 (10%) for charity (it always comes back to me multifold), then I'd save the rest until I was forced to sell or until BTC became the standard for all buying and selling, then I'd just use it like fiat  :D

If it was sent from some other address, although I know I have the right to keep them, I'd message the other person like mentioned above then see if it was on purpose. If not, I'd return everything. If you find a guys wallet you return it. If the person in front of you drop a $20 bill you pick it up and offer it to them. The end.

I would exchange it to my bank account and would be really happy :)

If it is sent by a known person by accident than that is fair enough to return it back, but what if it is sent by unknown person? Would you still return it back?? And the answer is NO. Nobody would return it back as 50 BTC is a huge amount and if that is reflecting in your wallet than I think that you are lucky and it is same as gambling, as gambling is also totally depends on luck factor, So I think you should have fun with that  ;D

If someone sent that amount of bitcoin without checking the bitcoin address then I would send them 1 btc back with a message to ask them if they wanted the rest of the bitcoin back, as they should have been more careful with where they send 50 btc or $10000/£5000.

Well that is really funny question it's like near impossible to get 50BTC in one transaction by mistaken that really huge amount and nobody will send this kind of amount, for me i never get 50 mBtc  in my wallet than it's like dreaming with open eyes to get a huge amount like that. ;)

I have to agree with that. You guys might seriously believe that you would be an honest person and send the bitcoins back right now, but if it happens? 99.999% of everyone who just responded will transfer the bitcoins to another address and let the party begin. That's why I'm not going to give an answer; as a human being, you and I can't trust ourselves to make the "right" decision.

Well I have to check who the address owner of that 50 btc is. If I couldnt find, then the wisest act for me is separating it to some parts, like 60% in saving, 30% in investment, and for the rest, I will spend it to buy my stuffs and gambling. But it will really a problem if those btc is a scamming money, and the sender was careless when sending it to wrong address. So, we could be a guilty person if the victims find our address. :D

I once found a purse in the parking lot when i worked as a bag boy at a grocery store. I returned it to the lost and found and never checked what was in it. When the women came back to the store she was so frantic she lost her purse and was so relieved that i put it in the lost and found. It brings more joy to me to seeing people happy and to help them out. My sister had the same thing happen to her, during Christmas she worked at SEARS in the mall and a lady lost her purse with $5,000 in it and she returned it with all the money in it. Turns out that 5,000 in the purse was for her heart transplant she was going to have the next day. Its good to do good and God sees that, and to be honored by God one day of all good deeds done to the people and the world means everything for someone like me and should for your too.

Then i will pm that person and ask him to sign a message from the wallet from which he send those bitcoins to me.

I'm going to be perfectly honest and say - I'm going to just take those bitcoins. Maybe if the owner contacts me, I'll compromise with them by partially returning their coins.

If the guys who did the wrong transferring sends a note asking for a refund providing a valid reason, of course I will gladly return the amount. No reward is needed unless the guys voluntary sends one. Put myself in his shoe, I can understand the state of frustration he is going through.

P.S. seriously, the mathematical probability of someone typing in the wrong payment address is so astronomically low, I think it must be some debt someone owed you from long ago  that you forgot about or have already written off as a deadbeat. There's no way money just "accidentally" drops in your lap.

One time, I found a guy's wallet on the ground. I mailed the money and id back to him, but cut up and threw away the ratty old wallet and credit cards. It didn't make sense spending $4 of my money to mail back a bunch of credit cards that he probably already cancelled and a ratty old wallet that was worthless. It makes more sense to spend approx 40 cents to mail him back $20 of his money and his ID.

So, yeah, if they emailed me for the money, I'd return it. However, I wouldn't recommend blindly just sending the money back because the return address could be a temporary one. For example, if they sent the money using https://shapeshift.io (https://shapeshift.io) , they wouldn't get the money back if you sent it back to the sending address.

I would sell it all in coinbase. I don't know where it came from and I'm not going to listen to anybody that says they sent it to me unless they sign a message. On the off case that it's somebody I know, I might return most of it.

I had an experience, Once I mistakenly make a transfer (around $250) to someone which I didn't know personally. However the person came back saying that he will send the coins back. He asked some additional information from me for the transfer and never heard back from him again.

I will sell the 25 Bitcoins, and the money from i sell bitcoins i will invest and build a shop or something in real life. maybe i use 5 bitcoins for betting/gambling  ;D. and also i will buy btc account that have hero rank for join signature campaign and do trading.

well this happened to me, but i'm on the other side of the fence, I sent BTC to a wrong address but fortunately, she returned it. Yes, its a female who received coins. I's not huge but at least she returned. So if it happened to me, definitely I will return to owner.

I would try to identify the owner of that wallet by taking a close look to the recent transactions. If I somehow found the owner I would hand him his bitcoin back . But if I cousin't find the owner I would just hold the coins for the future.

it depends. i can't see if the funds got sent to me by mistake or on purpose as some one sent them for fun. if the coins got sent to me by mistake then the dude will most likely send a few dust transactions with a comment saying 'it was a mistake, please send them back' from the address the coins were sent. then i will surely send them back.

I'd immediately dump it on a local exchange and make real estate investments. ;)

Don't know. I never expected 50BTC on my addy. And if i found, i'll sign my wallet addy as my email id or my mobile number, so that sender can contact me. And i'll ask to prove the ownership of that addy (addy, which i received from), then i'll send back all. :) tx fees will be that 50BTC.

There's a very small chance to receive wrong sent coins to your address considering the number of combinations available for a BTC address

But theres also a very small chance you win on the lottery, and people do win ;P

If it's a random error it most certainly doesn't have to be someone who knows you.

I like the idea of hanging onto it and watching the Forum...or I might post a note on the forum and say "who lost 50BTC" and if they can explain the exact timing and address sent from you can verify you're talking to the right person. Keeping a commission would be appropriate for the person who owns the BTC to give you, but you shouldn't take it on your own, that's just as bad as keeping it all to begin with.

The bitcoins sent to me was random and by mistake, something that I didn't join like lottery.
When ever I lose money I always say to my self they need it most.

I like how many of you say you would return the bitcoin but if I'm honest with myself, I think I wouldn't (under my current circumstances anyway). If it was an accidental transaction between buyer and seller yes, but if it's a random 50btc then no. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to rip someone off though but I would justify to myself that it would be a lesson learnt to the sender.

I will try to find the original owner by first of all searching in the forum and social media but if I find no threads then I will open one, post on twitter, reddit and tell the original owner to come by and post a signed message proving that the address the Bitcoins came from is his and then I would return his BTC.

Also, until I find the original owner I would transfer the funds to one of my cold storage address, I wouldn't want to risk keeping someone else's money in my hot wallet, since I presume that is where I would see it because I rarely check balance of my empty cold storage addresses and if the BTC is send there then I wouldn't even know until the time comes to use that address.

If I found 50btc in my wallet maybe just some error in the system I will sign off again and if still there I wait some some post here or I no one post here maybe I will donate it.

If I opened my wallet and found 50 BTC, I would wonder what I sold while I was drunk the night before.  In fact, I woke up once and found a Pandacoin wallet staking with 60 million Pandacoin in it.  To this day, I still haven't sold a single Pandacoin and have no idea what I was thinking when I got them because I was drunk.

So, with the 50 BTC, I would get drunk, probably, and invest in Pandacoin or something.

No one would ever return bitcoins if they are found in any individual's wallet and that also are transferred by mistake, it is like winning a lottery, everyone one is saying that they would return, but that's not true, If I found in my wallet than I would not return.

You didn't steal it and it didn't came from gambling so you can go ahead an exchange it or use it to pay for services.

bitcoin mixers are used in order to reach full anonymity when using bitcoin. basically you send bitcoin to one address and receive the same amount in your new address from a couple of unknown addresses so it can not be traced back to you.
bitmixer.io (my signature) is one of the best mixers which have been around for a long time

I would tell the world some kind gentleman or lady sent me 10k  :o But I would also send them a very large percentage of it back as we are all meant to be family here even if most don't feel that way/ Outcasts of the family. Make double sure you are sending to the correct address. Double check and then check again.

Its not like email that you can just resend again. Once you clicked that 'send' button its a done deal and the chances of you getting your coins back and or any part of it back is a 50/50 at best.

50/50 chance you'll get your coins back seems a bit high!  I would feel bad but I would convince myself to keep the mis-sent coins...especially if I believed the sender had plenty more....I would convince myself that I was being like Robin Hood in a sense.  I think many others would too.

its not about how much finds the sender have left in his wallet it should not effact your selfrespect afterall its all depend on you if you bealive in god and bealive that one day you will be in front of him that there are more chances that you will return the money

I would sent it to another wallet I controlled as perhaps it was the result of a collision. I know a collision is supposed to be a super rare event, but people do get struck by lighting and win lotteries which are also rare.

Finding 50 BTC as a luck is highly impossible. Address collision is highly impossible for next one million years. So, somebody may send you 50 BTC by entering a wrong address. So, it must be returned to the sender for his lose and believing in God. If you steal somebody's 50 BTC to may loose 100 BTC in some day.

50 BTC in my wallet is impossible (yet) because I dont know anyone who owes me that much coins and my BTC address is not yet posted anywhere in this forum

When this happens then you should move the coins as fast as possible on a safe address you control. If you have the same address someone other has then there is a chance that a third person has the same. And he might steal it. So pushing it to a safe address is the first step.

Sending it back is not a good idea since you never know where you send it and who controls it. Might be the sender can't access the coins because he sent form an exchange or so.

I would wait until the sender sends me a signature showing me that he really is the owner of the coins. I would help him doing that.

Sounds like the best way to lose your 50BTC. I don't know a way to have more than 50BTC at the end. In most cases you will have less than before.

Because there is practically no way to mine profitable for the average user. Most users who jump into mining forget that there is something called difficulty which leads to constantly dropping profits each 2 weeks. At the end you have to have made your investment back in the first 2 to 3 months. If you didn't manage you will lose.

It doesn't matter if you mine yourself or do cloud mining.

I would seriously buy as much maybe all digicube coins.

Save some and invest the rest in building up my online business for additional long term gain.

I will start buy and sell business online accepting payments in bitcoin.

i will try looking for it's source for sometime, if i don't find anything then exchange it to usd and withdraw to a bank account.

Since I got the 50BTC for free, I would play with it on the Bitcoin markets.

Definitely look into investing, maybe in bitcoin, maybe elsewhere   :P

I'd be so happy that i'd have to get drunk or drugged to calm myself.
