It's to overclock you GPU and speed up the fans, without the use of extra software. The settings are stored in the GPU's ROM so you don't have to set them again. You don't need MSI Afterburner after that, tough you can still use it to watch the temperatures. For Linux the same; no OC tools needed anymore... radeon bios editor comes with detailed descriptions and tutorials you should read before flashing your cards bios! *** THIS COULD DAMAGE YOUR DISPLAY ADAPTERS AND PROBABLY VOID YOU WARRANTY *** Preparation: - get & install both programms (pointless to say, I know...) - pull the actual bios from your card using gpu-z, copy the file to a safe place as a backup to restore the original bios sooner or later. If you have more than 1 card in your rig, make sure you chose the right one, or better: boot your rig with the patient only. - open radeon bios editor and load the bios you pulled using the 'load bios' button. - click the button 'get winflash', install winflash on your rig. - if you have multiple cards in your rig, take a note of the bios checksum on the 'information' page. - if you want to unlock the upper GPU clock limit, go to 'additional features' and try method 1 or 2. method 1 didnt work for me but 2 did with no problems. - if you need higher voltage settings, go to 'clock settings' and edit the voltage on the voltage registers or at the clock info settings. BUT BE CAREFFUL! YOUR CARD MAY JUMP TO THE MAX VOLT SETTING ON LOAD! ONLY DO SMALL INCREASES! I SUGGEST TRYING TO OVERCLOCK WITHOUT INCREASED VOLTS FIRST! - you are still safe and could leave the programm without harming your card at this point. *** THIS COULD DAMAGE YOUR DISPLAY ADAPTERS AND PROBABLY VOID YOU WARRANTY *** Flashing: - click 'acquire / flash', then chose the location to 'winflash' on your rig. - click 'analyze' to get a list of flashable devices. - chose the correct device to flash by setting the radio button to the right. Make sure the checksum fits the one you noted at the beginning!!! Dont flash a saphire 5850 bios on a asus 5870 card! - flash the bios with the 'flash bios' button, this may take a minute. - If you get an ok-message you may reboot your rig and the changes take affect. - if flashing fails, DONT reboot your rig. load the original backup bios you made and try to flash the card with its original bios. Try that several times if it fails!! Bricked?: - card is not recognized after reboot and does no hashing? Try to flash the original bios into your card. You need another card as the primary graphics adapter (or onboard video). Swap cards if you cant boot. So on Method 2, When in linux it shouldn't affect anything? Reading it may affect some windows drivers to have a invalid hash, but can you verify it doesn't affect linux? Does it make you able to overclock the GPU clocks more? Does it make it more stable at higher GPU clocks? Post by: macbook-air on February 20, 2012, 01:30:57 PM I followed the guide but after flash the bios, aticonfig --odgc and --odgt fails get clocks and temperatures, pplib-cmd also fails, and the mining performance is like at stock clocks. I have tried on Sapphire HD 5830, 5850 and XFX 5830, same result.
