Post by: sun_tzu on October 15, 2012, 06:46:25 AM

Never. 100% included in lease subsidized for whatever silly reason. Sure, I pay manhattan rent ($1800/month) but I pay that with my normal income already. Mining is 100% free for me..

ASICs are tipping the playing field, as with GPUs most of the cost to mine, spent in a year, went to electricity.  With ASICs, most of the cost is in the hardware, with a fraction of that amount going to electricity.   But low cost electricity sure doesn't hurt!

wall to wall racks and a few tons of cooling would test that theory

My hydro rates: Ontario, Canada.

On-peak: 11.7 cents ( 11am - 5pm )
Mid-peak: 10 cents ( 7am - 11am, 5pm - 7pm )
Off-peak: 6.5 cents ( 7pm - 7am )

Plus a bunch of crappy delivery charges and debt repayment jokes.

About 0.12 EUR per kWh here in Finland. Transmission is about 50% of the cost...

I do all my calculations just assuming I am paying $0.13 kWh, never really checked the bill though.

in sydney power is billed quaterly and price is broken up into
$0.20 for first 500kwh
$0.26 for next 1000kwh
$0.32 after that

so its hard to make yourself turn a light on in the middle of the night to go to the toilet let alone max out a rack of gpu's

who would have known that digging up coal and burning it was not a good source of power especially after you pay a carbon tax on it.

lucky we send all that nasty uranium over seas for everyone else to get cheap power

I wonder if a chart with $/kwh costs would make a good wiki page somewhere...

Are you joking or telling the truth? lol i didn't know solar power could produce that much electricity, Thats sweet

Ah, solar can produce a ton of energy.  Especially if you're in an area with a good amount of sun.  Most of the normal sized solar panels produce 200-220 watts each.  You can probably get a 2-3 KW (Kilowatt/2-3000 watts) system for under 10K.

£0.11/kWh

I average about .18 USD/kWh; infrastructure here is pretty strained  :-[

I'd love to have a solar and/or wind setup, but since I'm renting atm (and power is not included in rent) it's not feasible.

Well it is the internet but I am telling the truth.  I have solar on my home and I live in So Cal in one of the sweetest spots to be under the sun for solar in the US.  Technically I paid for the pannels so the electric is not free but I was paying for the pannels before I got into bitcoin so I just look at this as helping to pay down my life in general.  I payed off the pannels about a year or so ago so I don't get a bill for it but they did cost me.  I not going to go into specifics but I have a grip of pannel on my home.

I don't look at mining from a cost analysis point of view. I look at it as I'm paying worthless paper for electricity, but I'm gaining something valuable in the end.

I really regret not being an early adopter a few years back during my dorm years. Not having to pay for utility bills might actually make up for having to eat cafeteria food on a regular basis.
