It doesn't really seem like any of the newer coins have captured the attention and investment of Bitcoin, but at the same time everyone knows Bitcoin, not much to discuss there. When that never arrived I became more interested in CryptoNote. Of the existing CryptoNote coins I think Boolberry is most advanced in terms of scaling and mixin issues.
If Zerocash arrives next year and all trust issues are resolved then that may become the hottest coin.
