Title: Do bitcoin addresses expire?
Post by: hoganJ32888 on October 07, 2015, 03:52:17 PM
suppose you give someone a btc addresses to send you bitcoin, and then they wait 8-12 weeks before sending you bitcoin to that address.

is the address still valid? It will still go to your wallet?

Once they're created they never go anywhere. Just make sure to retain the private keys. If you're using a HD wallet like Mycelium and carry out subsequent transactions then new addresses will be created for each one, but if money is sent to the old address it'll still show up in your balance.

Yeah, people wonder about such incredible things. I wouldn't think about expiring address :D but now other people reading this topic will know better.

Depends on which wallet you are using. If you are using desktop clients like Core, Electrum, Multibit, where you generate your own address, they never expire if you have the private key in your wallet file.

If are using a shared web wallet where you do not have the private keys to the address, they may "expire". You never have control of the address, the web wallet site credit your balance with the amount they receive into the address. When they stop checking that address or when they drop the old private keys, your address "expires".

This may also be the case with some exchanges - they will give you a deposit address but since you don't own the private keys it's best to check that they are still using that same address for you to deposit.

Your own wallet addresses though will not expire. It's best to always keep your keys backed up safely.

No. Losing your wallet is what gets you.

Bitcoin address does not expire it stays alive "forever"
But the other part is that you should always check that it is available in your wallet or account.
Because if you backup your wallet, and after that you made transaction, if your coins are moved to another address (from the same wallet) and after a time you want to restore your wallet with the old wallet backup you may loose your bitcoins as the new address generated will not show to your wallet which means you lost, i will find a thread about this story and will let you know. Basically it does not expire but it's all about if you can access it.

Also, it should be worth noting that most of the time when you receive bitcoins on some wallets, the address will change... don't worry about that, the address you provided before for someone to pay you will still remain valid and payments will still end up in your wallet from the previous address.

Yes, to be really honest, I never thought about this as well. I guess this was just something that made common sense to me that it can't happen so I wasn't even worried about. :)

But yes OP, this was a pretty good and simple question! Now we are all sure!

Yes private key matters. No one is ready to share their private key unless for any other peculiar reasons. Bitcoins can be sent or revived with any old bitcoin address.
Some online services shows you a new address with a timer, this is because to identity your transaction with their hot wallet.

no, but i can see in the future, if the technology is changed and we need a new typo of private key, hashed in another form, it may become invalid at that point

but i'm sure the dev would say it long before it will happen

never thinking about it before, anyway nice question
iam not sure but if you used blockchain you can generate address and still recorded on your wallet and never expire,so the conclusion is no.
but actually i have simillar question i always generate new address on poloniex especially altcoin's address,if i give someone a address to send me some altcoin, and then they wait maybe 1 weeks before they sending me and then i generate new address before they send me,is my address still recorded like blockchain did or i'll lose it and what would be happen with my coin?

Even a email address may expire if you do not use it regularly but bitcoin address does not require you to use it for send or receive bitcoins. It will be yours as long as you keep private keys safe and with yourself.

Nope.

You put some bitcoin there today, and it will be there 1000 years from now, even if you are not alive.

If the network is alive by then then your bitcoin will be there too. IT depends on the network.

I had this question too. Googled it and it led me right here. Might sound irrelevant to BTC experts but for some of us, yes, kinda scary not really knowing. So I'm happy have the answer! Addresses are "randomly" generated hence they fear of their random disappearance or expiry.

They ask to change address because you can see how many transactions have occurred on a same address. If they find that the address belongs to you. Then your privacy may be at stake.

No address ever expires. It is good practice to generate new addresses for each transaction to preserve the pseudo-anonymous properties of bitcoin. A public address will always be valid for the corresponding private address, but you want to make sure you control that private key before sending money to it. Example, if coinbase gave you an address to deposit to, I would only use it once. They may not be monitoring the old ones.

Addresses generated by services like coinbase might "expire" if their system forgets them or something.

Addresses created by your hardware wallet are all generated by your wallet seed. Simplified you take function(seed, n) and you get an adress. Where n is a number that probably starts with 1. Since its slightly more insecure to reuse an address your wallet will increase n by 1 every time you need an address. It's trivial for the wallet to check through millions of different n:s so your wallet will always be able to see all addresses generated from its seed. So if a hardware wallet has generated an address it can always generate the key again if needed. As long as you have the seed that generated an adress you won't lose funds due to lost addresses.

I suspect it's slightly more advanced in practice but the principle is the same. You can receive and send from the same address multiple times if you really want to.
I'll be take be carefully when using bitcoin address from exchanges services, since it could be have rolling address or going to archived. I wouldn't recommended using wallet from exchanges as there are still many web wallet either mobile that can using with backup private key.

Transactions never expire. They just wait to be confirmed. If the transaction is invalid there is no transaction at all. It’s like never happened. Bitcoin transactions are valid only if they have been recorded within the blockchain.

To my knowledge,, I do not think Bitcoin address do expire because when creating a wallet ,,it wasn't written in the terms and conditions, and I think same applies to local bank account which doesn't expire, instead it gets blocked/frozen,But doesn't expire.

Bitcoin wallet address does not expire, and as long the private key is save, the wallet is secured, secondly bitcoin wallet address has one private key in wallet address, is the best wallet so far that you can open any time, without using one device, as long you know your password.

the bitcoin address or private key does not have expiration but I know it has been generated which can happen but it still depends on the wallet you use because we do not hold the facts on our web wallet or private key we can not say it can not be lost

Title: Re: Do bitcoin addresses expire?
Post by: Dudeperfect on February 25, 2018, 10:22:19 AM
The bitcoin address is valid as far as you have your private keys with you. Even if you are losing your private keys then you will be able to send Bitcoins to that address but then you won't be able to extract Bitcoin from that wallet. However, if you are holding your Bitcoins on an exchange then you might not be able to use the same wallet if the exchange is deciding to shut down their services unless you have exported your private key from the exchange before shutting down.

Any Bitcoin address never expires but you should always have a private key associated with that address if you are willing to use it to store your funds.
