Title: [ANN] Bitcoin Friday - Black Friday for Bitcoin Businesses. (Info inside)

Black Friday just got 3% cheaper.

This November 9th, 2012, over 25 Bitcoin Merchants are hosting sales. Major sales in an attempt to introduce more consumers to Bitcoin and invigorate existing consumer spending. With news reports of 78% of bitcoins not being spent, we need to do *something*.

If you'd like to help, please give me some feedback, or post our promotion images: http://bitcoinfriday.com/promote.html

Thank you!

-Jon

I'll most def watch this and see if anything perks my interest to give a try. Pretty good idea to hitch on a popular mainstream thing and grab some attention.

Bittiraha.fi will definitely participate. Both our exchange and our online store will have discounts. I'm contacting via email for the details. Our services are only for the Finns at this time though. We are expanding in 2013.

Great!
Can I ask why it's called "Black Friday"?
Black is more of a symbolic color for doom/death.. (No racism intended!)

Its based off a american shopping day after thanksgiving. Generally american stores have HUGE sales that day and it is the start to the holiday season.

It's called black friday because that's the day in the year stores start operating in the black(good) as opposed to red(bad).

I'm really looking forward to Bitcoin Friday. I will definitely spend some bitcoins that day.

Good idea! This may very well be the first time I purchase anything on "black Friday" in ~12 years I've been in North America. One concern is the credibility of all merchants you let participate. Given tne irreversibility of bitcoin payments, it would be a PR disaster to let a scammer or an incompetent merchant sneak through and ruin somebody's first-ever Bitcoin experience. This is why I liked MtGox's "trusted merchant" idea, although í don't how well it's implemented. Anyway, please screen carefully whom you advertise on this Web page.

Also, we need more buzz in the media about this campaign, with links to easy-to-start wallets. How would you get a curious newbie to get and spend bitcoins in a few days?

Still working out what kind of gift packages we are going to offer.

Thanks Coinabul for putting this together!

Make me a page!

Also, I'm screening them myself, I've disallowed a couple sites due to quality issues... But I won't take responsibility for all merchants, if you have any doubts, feel free to ask about them!

Great, but can you suggest specific sequence of steps I should recommend a btc-curious person to take, so they can acquire and then spend coins within a day or two? To me this is still  a sticking point: too many possibillities, endless combinations, most of them half-baked or too intimidating for an average person.

There is no easy method unfortunately. I hope this highlights the difficulty of using Bitcoin and how it needs to change!

I'm really stressing that merchants with a physical presence host a "Bitcoin Party" to sell bitcoins for cash and teach consumers how to use clients. That's ideally the easiest way to buy coins on the day of.

Cheers,

I will get Whiskey Dicks in Orlando to do a happy hour special on Friday after work, and I'll be there to educate and sell bitcoins.  I always help people install a wallet on their phone when I'm there.

Anyone need a concealment holster? I'll be putting up some holsters that I'll be liquidating on Bitcoin Friday. It was a deal gone bad for me, but the timing was perfect to help out the bitcoin economy. More details coming when I get them up on the site.

It looks like we are going to offer 20% off all our items.  This will hopefully get some new future customers and a way of saying thanks to the repeat customers.  We will post on our thread tomorrow night.

I might be interested in a concealment holster for a Sig 226 and a 228.
What I really need right now is something like an Uncle Mike's Kydex Belt holster for two FMK 9C1's and the 226. Got anything like that?

Unfortunately, no, I don't have those. What I have right now is the Cell Pal, a deep concealment holster. But it will hold anything from a LCP sized semi auto, up to a full size 1911. So one of these will be all you need to fit those. Here's a site with some info (http://www.concealmentconcepts.com/cellpal.html). It's not my site, because I had taken them off and just set up the page for Bitcoin Friday. I don't want any premature orders, so I'll put my page up at midnight.

Also, I had to look up the FMK. They seem like pretty good guns, I hadn't heard of them before.

EDIT: I went ahead and put the page up. http://shamblindistribution.com/bitcoin-friday.html

Black Friday just got 3% cheaper.

With news reports of 78% of bitcoins not being spent, we need to do *something*.

While I welcome discount deals, nothing wrong with 78% of bitcoins not being spent, right?
Just means plenty of people use it as a long-term investment.  I am guessing the fact that it can be used this way has motivated plenty of people to learn more about bitcoin, download the client and blockchain, and do the occassional purchase as well.
More purchases and a bigger bitcoin economy would obviously be good for BTC acceptance and value however.

The 78% bit was more to motivate people.

Hoarding has been pointed out before as an issue, some people agree, others disagree. I don't really subscribe to one side or the other, I merely believe, as you said, that a bigger Bitcoin economy helps Bitcoin in the long run.
