Australia is going to start testing passport-less travel soon. Your information and travel history will be stored online. Including Biometrics (Fingerprints, Retina, DNA).

If this technology is adopted by other nations, i am very sure it will be. We will be saying goodbye to our privacy in the near future :-\

Oh my god. This is very very dangerous move. I would not agree to give that much info out to government.
This is worse than looking for our internet history or phone usage.

The way I see it the goverment wants to control their people in any way that they can. They want to know where you are, who you're with, time and date, all that bullcrap. You can't live your life in peace anymore without the goverment knowing.

Well that suck but Australia they have always been strict about this.

Well I guess it would be useful if and aussie lost his passport.

It's getting worse and worse. It's one thing I hate when I'm at an airport when a guy checks everywhere I've been before. The guy looks back at me, then he looks back at my passport, because somehow traveling a lot like I do, makes me suspicious of I don't know what.

Australia has just started testing this. Plus it would be very difficult for all countries to agree on something like this.

Australia is deploying it in Australian-NewZealand borders. The project is well past testing if you learn the government talking. Australia has stopped stamping visa labels on passports this september and everything is now on VEVO cloud.

Also if you look at Canadian immigration laws, everything is a copy of Australian system, each condition. The e-medical system Australia uses has been adopted by Canada as it is. I am very sure Canada will join soon with more to follow

This might work for travel between Australia and New Zealand at this stage but I cannot see this rolling out very quickly on a worldwide scale.

In order for that to be done it would mean that all countries would need to be on similar systems and I cannot see that happening within the next decade. It might get as far as traveling to maybe the US and Europe but other than that you will still need your physical passport.

My first concern, as others have already mentioned, is the security related aspects. This will be a prime target for the hackers of the world. Why just hack a company for their records if you can rather hack a country for all the information on its citizens.

Don't forget the controversy over government ministers (for example in the UK) quietly revoking people's citizenship while they are out of the country. Having a system in which you are a citizen if the government database says so and not otherwise could become very risky.

I would rather this not develop further and just use my regular passport as I always have

If I remember correctly, already few years ago it was like trying to with scanner to study the eye lens  in the United States. As you can see, not really successful, because so far in airports never seen anything like this..  ::)

I agree with the sentiments but I look at the benefits too. You give a little privacy and in return things will get a lot saver to say the least.

One of the oldest tricks in the book and it has worked on a grand scale here in the post-9/11 US with such atrocities as the "Patriot" Act - don't ever fall for that line of b.s.

I am not surprised there. Bio metrics documents are unfortunately a song of the future, song with bad tunes in it.
We will be soon numbered, cataloged, sampled and chipped with some microprocessor. Future from dark Cyberpunk movies are at our doorstep.

This is a pretty bad idea as hackers are just lining up to scam people and citizens should be very wary of this idea
