Title: A tip button
Post by: USB-S on November 09, 2015, 01:46:28 PM
Bitcointalk needs its own wallet system where you could dump some bits and each post should have a tip button, where you could tip the author of the post. Sorry if this has been suggested before, but in my opinion this would be a beast feature. What's your opinion on this?

It has been and theymos said nope, dont wana get in trouble with the law because of AML/KYC regulations. Thats also the reason changetipp will not be implemented. (probably remembered that wrong, see below)

People can put a bitcoin address into their profile at which they accept tips. Of course, since bitcoin isn't so well suited for micropayments and this is not well integrated with the forum software, tipping is relatively expensive due to miner fees, and complicated to do on top.

I think theymos was only concerned about the forum having its own internal tipping mechanism which could cause problems and I don't think would be a good idea for the reasons stated above and for also security concerns but I'm not sure if adding changetip would cause any issues. Don't many other sites have changetip integration without any problems? Wouldn't really be any different to a website accepting paypal payments or donations imo.

rather then adding own wallet to forum its better if they add button under each user's name with sign of BTC and whenever someone click on it they send tip to the users bitcoin address that added in their profile page

IIRC it was still the argument, but I might be wrong as I cant find a quote.

Being able to upload a QR code that enlarges when you click on it would be a good option I think and easy for people to send coins with their mobile wallets. I do support a tipping function as long as people don't start begging for tips etc but people rarely tip anyway.

Maybe bitcointalk could be one of the sidechains, where transactions are instant, only withdrawals require miners.

people post pure gold rarely aswell, every other post should not and will not get a tip.

But it isn't happening regardless. somewhat sad, but I guess we all can live without this feature.

First of all, we all know that having BTC address in your profile doesn't work as a tipping tool. It's not convenient, but mostly, if you tip someone, you want them to know that it was you and you want them to know which post you tipped them for. Tx fees also don't help.

Integrated tipping would be a great addition, but I do understand why theymos wouldn't want it. It would be a massive pain to maintain cold/hot wallets and he would take a big responsibility on keeping funds on behalf of thousands of members. KYC/AML shouldn't be an issue as appropriate limits could be set.

Changetip is not as functional as tip button, but much more feasible to implement.

If anyone's curious about how tip button could look like, here's the example from Polish forum (bitcoin.pl)

http://i67.tinypic.com/2qdu434.png

In the right top corner (circled) you see tip option with 3 pre-set amounts (0.0001, 0.0005 and 0.001), you can tip the post multiple times so if you want to tip 0.01 just click 0.001 ten times (not very convenient but works). Those 3 fields are grey if you don't have sufficient funds in your account, when you do - the colour changes to orange. If you only have 0.0001, then the smallest button is orange, other 2 are grey.

On the left (circled) you see "tips for this post", you can click on it and see who tipped and how much.
