Post by: bitcoinsmartmoney on November 09, 2015, 05:21:15 PM
friends - i have a bitfinex trading account with about 25k on it.

I have my username and password but my phone got messed up so I dont have Google Authenticator anymore.  I tried to email support but havent heard back yet

i checked my ios backups but none of them have backups of my authy or authenticator apps

did i just loose access to my bitfinex account and all my money over such a simple error?

im almost weeping over here right now.

I'm happy for you, 25k are really a lot of money :)
Always backup your 2fa, not every service can do that...for example just-dice cannot.

Man. Can you imagine losing such an amount of money for not just doing a simple thing as 2FA and WRITING THE AUTHENTICATION DOWN  ???

$25,000 is no joke to anyone to lose  ::)

WOW, what a scare! Did they do anything to prevent this from happening to you in the future? Multiple email addresses for security access, etc?

$25.000 is a serious amount of coin. Glad you got it sorted!

Glad you got your money. Literally the exact same thing happened to me with my Coinbase account. I messaged support and they were utterly useless. After fighting with them for a week they told me to open a new account to solve my problem, but would not transfer any funds from my old account. Gee thanks Coinbase. Luckily for me I only had a small amount in the account. But I guess that belongs to Coinbase now.

And that, my friends, is why you should never use online wallets. :)

You were lucky that the wallet only contained a very small amount; hopefully it was dust and it didn't really matter that you lost it. I've noticed that popular online wallets (namely Blockchain.info and Coinbase) often seem to have problems with a lot of their users. It's a lot better to just download Electrum or Bitcoin Core, or maybe even invest in a Trezor wallet (which is well-worth the investment).

I only use Coinbase to purchase the coins with my bank account. Normally I move the coins out of Coinbase immediately, but for whatever reason I left a small amount in the account. Honestly I don't even remember why lol. But in any case you're right. You don't own the funds unless you control the private key.

I really hope that you don't trust anyone blindly when it comes to money which is not trackable and anyone can buy and sell it anywhere, exchanges are not the place to keep the money, they're there to just trade and get out. OP, I hope you move that money to a safer wallet and make sure to back up your 2fa key this time.
