Title: Fan Duel, Draft Kings
Post by: Aemon on November 11, 2015, 04:15:30 PM
Anyone here about this recently?  Apparently it is not considered a game of skill so they are banning it in the state of New york.

Interesting read none the less

New York this year:

"Damn, look at all that revenue those two sites are raking in from our citizens and we aren't getting one red cent of it. We gotta stop this."

New York next year:

"New York is proud to announce Empire State Fantasy Football! State-run and regulated (and taxed) because we care about protecting and safeguarding our citizens."

haha, that might be true :)  It is pretty big news though I mean I wonder how much of a hit this is going to be.   The NFL really promotes the crap out of these sites.

I support this anyway .They are doing a great job by banning such imbescle ways of calling 'it as a game'.Altgouh NBA already does it soon many of other websites will start going for it.

Apparently, the hit would be 500,000 New York consumers worth:

FanDuel And DraftKings Fight Back, File Lawsuits Against NY Attorney General
http://techcrunch.com/2015/11/14/fanduel-and-draftkings-fight-back-file-lawsuits-against-ny-attorney-general/

“Today, we have taken decisive legal action to prevent a unilateral, misinformed and legally misguided attempt by the New York Attorney General to act as “judge, jury and executioner” for daily fantasy sports in New York. We are asking the New York Supreme Court to rule that the Attorney General’s cease-and-desist letter is unconstitutional, an abuse of discretion, and simply wrong. We are confident in our legal position and intend to continue to fight to preserve the right of the over 500,000 New York consumers to play the fantasy sports games they love.” – DraftKings

Ha, good for them. More power to them. I hope they win. They can certainly afford to pay the legal fees for sure.

Is NY the only state that is prohibited?

So far yes, my main fear with this is other states will start following cause its New York.  I am glad they are having a lawsuit filed.  There shouldn't be any reason this site is not allowed.

No a few states already had bans in place and Fan Duel, DraftKings and Yahoo don't accept players from:  Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, and Washington State.

The reason that New York is getting so much press is the way the ban came in place and the fact that it probably accounts for 10% to 15% of the player pool, so will have a significant impact on the industry.

Since these DFS sites popped out of a law that did exactly that I'm not sure why anyone is shocked, in particular the people running Draftkings and Fanduel. If they didn't expect something like this they are morons of epic proportion.

They spent 100 million on advertising?  :o The business is booming!
I think some other betting companies paid the gov officials to ban the competition  ;)

Shocking since these companies popped up after those companies paid the government to ban online poker and they found a loophole in the law allowing this.

From what I understand is that the loophole they exploited is that "Games of Skill" such as Fantasy Sports where exempted from UIEGA which was the law that prevented online gambling.

The case will be about is daily fantasy sports skill or luck versus season long fantasy sports games.

What hasn't helped that in the UK both Fan Duel and DraftKings have applied for a Gambling License in order to operate in the UK
