Is anyone doing it?
I've been reading forums for past hour, looking at the various exchanges and how to actually buy Bitcoins from good old blighty.

I would have choosen paypal, but that after some reading seems to be a non popular way of trading now.
I've signed up with Dwollar, libertyserve Bitmarket.eu but it's all rather complex just to get my GBP into the econnomy in order to purchase some Bitcoins to speculate with.  I have to jump through hoops fill out this, that, the other, counter sign with dead grannies fingerprints, local school teacher to counter sign ( yeah, like im going back that many years! ) all that sort of thing, worse yet, i have to have a bank account in the states!!!.. yadda yadda yadda or the transfers take 'days' to actually go through.... which isn't that bad.. as long as i can trust the transfer system.

Is there like a 'UK' group doing this?
Is there a list of good known market sites that interact ok with UK users?
Is there a sort of list apart from #bitcoin-otc ? or is that the standard sellers and buys alike should aspire to ?

sorry for the questions, im still reading but these things just popped out and need an answer :P

Also a Brit newb.  Same list of questions as rocksalt.  Finding it difficult to find a way in.

Hi, fellow UK based person here. It is difficult. If you have a friend in the US then you could proxy through them. If you are based in London there are a few people around willing to sell btc for cash - although you would probably have to meet in Central London. Britcoin.co.uk doesn't seem to have enough volume to be useful but who knows, maybe that will change.

BritCoin has plenty of volume, nowhere near the amount on MtGox, mind, but what kind of volume are you looking for?

Also trade for BitCoin in PayPal at your own risk, considering that they now acknowledge BitCoin, implicitly, as a currency as there was once a merchant who offered a PayPal to BTC service, but I believe his account was frozen, so if they find out you are buying BTC there may be a risk they'd shut your account too, and PayPal are notorious for this.

BitCoin-otc would be other option if you want to sell/buy BTC for cash, but as far as exchanges are concerned, BritCoin is doing a fine job, unless you plan to buy/sell 100,000s of pounds worth of BitCoin.

I'm in the UK. I've done a couple of trades at Britcoin. It worked fine. Getting money in involves transferring money into a UK Lloyds Bank account noted on the site. After you register for your own account there you get a reference number to put with the transfer which identifies your account.

The first transfer I did was three days ago. I did it for free via online banking and it was credited to my Britcoin account the next day, well within 24 hours. The exchange from GBP to BTC was instant, and fine. I withdrew the BTC immediately to my own BTC wallet. No fees at all payable to Britcoin. I haven't tried withdrawing GBP from Britcoin.

I have also sent money to Mt Gox. This involved personally going to my bank and doing the transfer (to a French account) there. There was a £15 bank fee for the priority transfer, and it took just under 48 hours before I received an email saying my account had been credited.

I sent some more money to Britcoin yesterday. It hasn't been credited yet, but Britcoin has been down for several hours.

Mt Gox has about 100x the trade volume of Britcoin, and the price of BTC generally seems to be about 15% less than Britcoin. Unless the price is climbing rapidly, like it was a day ago, I would suggest using Mt Gox if you want to buy BTC in the UK. This assumes you have a regular UK bank account, of course. You can't just transfer cash to Mt Gox by walking into a UK bank. I asked while at the bank.

Britcoin is coming back up after a lot of testing. Also, the mininum transaction level will be siginifantly lowered in a matter of minutes. The bids will be matching imminently as well.

We will be daily processing withdaws and deposits from now on.

I transferred some funds to your Lloyds account well over 24 hours ago (my second deposit — the first a few days back went fine) and right now it hasn't been credited. Is there a backlog or has it got lost or something? I can email details if needed.

Please do not send Bitcoins to the old address. It is making the accounting more difficult.

bxor, we have now responded to every email now.

As for how the trades are processed. It is exchange at the price that you put in and then worked backwards. It is not the most ideal or efficient manner but it is still fair and there are no funds missing. This is something we will be changing soon however.

I've been looking through the forums more and more, and apart from britcoins.. theres pretty much zip zilch nada for us english :P i think its wide open for competition.... i was kinda thinking about doing something myself, but then i thought... naaah britcoins has the lead, i don't know enough about web coding to pull it together into a reasonable time frame to make it workth while.. plus that and im still learning about bitcoin processing .. sigh.. somedays.. there just isn't enough hours.

britcoin is very decent, reputable and convenient exchange for us, UK based folks. Surely it got some growth pains and technical issues, but genjix does stellar job sorting these out.

Even though trading is rather thin, it is still very useful. You can post your bids and asks, and if your price is close enough to the market price, chances are that your offer will be taken.
