I've got a the following set up:

-Processor (AMD FX-8350 CPU (8x 4.00GHz/8MB L2 Cache)))
-Memory (32 GB [8 GB x4] DDR3-1600 Memory Module))
-Video Card (AMD Radeon HD 7970 - 3GB - Single Card))
-Motherboard (Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 -- AMD 970))

As of right now I can get about 550 MH/s tops running CGminer and in the 50btc pool.  I'm interested in what miner and pool to use/join in order to get the most out of my hardware. 

FPGA Single from BFL, then buy the upgrade to Single SC (ASIC).  Together that will run you about $1,300.  until the ASIC come out you'll get about 0.125 BTC / Day on the single @ 830 MH/s.  When the ASIC hit the market its up in te air but at about 250 TH network rate you can still make about 1 BTC / day.

I bought 2.

for now I'm using 50BTC and like them.  Once ASIC gets here we'll see, things will change I'm sure.

At the current difficulty of 3,370,182 according to this page:

At the current exchange rate of 13.62 USD per BTC
that works out to about $1.12 worth of bitcoin per day.

So the question is, how much extra electricity does your computer use to calculate hashes at full speed 24 hours a day, and how much does that electricity cost?

Clearly if it increases your electricity costs more than $34 per month, you'd be financially better off turning off the computer and using the $34 per month to purchase bitcoins rather than spending $35 per month (or more) to mine $34 worth of bitcoin.

Well, I'm not paying my electricity bill.  But I am looking into a Single SC.  So I'll just wait and see where this takes me.  It's too bad the GPU farms are going out of date, they looked pretty cool.

are you overclocking or running at stock clocks, after some time and experimenting I get between 680 and  700Mhash per card for my 7970s

Similar set up to me. you can safely overclock the card tho for more hashes i've got mine at 1075 and i get 650~ mh/s, mine bombs out if i clock it to max but just short of it's fine and its a lot better than stock settings, just make sure you turn the fan speed up .

It'd be nice to mine .10 a day.  I'll see what I can find, any particular miner good for this? Pool?

Bitcoin is not a get rich quick scheme. Mining is a thing for professional ppl. Yeah you can mine with your computer but it's not a good idea, 1.12$ per day if you leave the computer mining 24/24? Meh

I have a 5970 (about 700 Mh/s) and tried most of the BTC pools out there. So far I like the eclipsemc pool as it does merge mining (bitcoin and namecoins at the same time).

I use deepbit.net with (4) 5970's putting about about 3100 m/h.  I like the fast accumulation throughout the day of coins I get with deepbit.

I like deep's Offers which pay per share and proportional modes as well as
instant payouts with no 120 block delay.

How is it that an older model such as the 5970 can mine at higher rates than a newer 7970?

Has it had special work/production done over the time it was released?  If so, I hope the same will happen with/for my card.

So the architecture and production process for the cores in the later models has changed. Usually they do this to improve game performance and don't pay any mind to bitcoin mining. It just happens that the older 5000 series cards had architecture and driver sets which seem optimal for mining bitcoins.

Oh wow, I see a good reason for ASICs then.

For one, it doesn't matter where you mine, over the longer term you will mine the same amount even solo. It just psychologically feels better to get daily payouts. Merged mining pools will net (very) slightly more. The software makes little difference in this. CG is tops though!

Two, a 5970 is a dual GPU board with more shaders than the 7970. Shader count is king! Which is why nVidia sucks balls...and they mine even worse. :P The 7970 is just MUCH more efficient at it. When the 7990 comes out (if it's not already), it's safe to expect that it will get 1.2GH/s+ since it is the equivalent of 2 7970's on one card.
