Title: New to mining, advice please.
Post by: ypisoni on January 01, 2016, 07:28:55 PM
Crypto currency caught my eye lately and I started mining scrypt for fun with my r9 270X but at 400khs, its painful to watch. I started looking into ASIC miners and liked those gaw/zeus fury miners and was thinking of running 4 or 5 with a raspberry pi, but being 2016 is it worth buying some or should I be looking at something else ? I don't expect to make a profit, its just a hobby I would like to get into.

Innosilicon ASICs seem to be the best devices (but require bigger investments) for Scrypt mining.
If you want to start smaller, it's good idea for look for used but working machines. 4-5 Gaw/Zeus miners will produce a lot of heat and noise, don't underestimate it.

Your GPU suits better to coins with ASIC resistant algos like X11. There was a lot of hype around ETH, also a GPU coin.
Or simply rent your hashrate on sites like miningrigrentals.com or Nicehash and use the profits to buy/trade the coin(s) of your choice.

but being 2016 is it worth buying some or should I be looking at something else ?

No one can tell you what will or may happen this year. BTC could explode or also go down to $100.
End of 2015, altcoin prices crashed down and in March/April they exploded (search for #altsareback).

I don't expect to make a profit, its just a hobby I would like to get into.

If you are into mining for profit, you probably want to do some research and find YOUR coin, the one you want to support (through mining, buying or whatever).
