They were just at 48%.

Holy crap

Did someone with a MASSIVE hashrate drop out of the pool or something? :P

edit when i read your post I checked deepbit and it's hashrate was reported as 1800GH. Now it's 2300GH and bitcoinwatch is looking normal again.

Nothing until someone verifies a forged chain. Then its over (well, for now. to appease the long-term visionaries).

If a forged chain is verified wont a good portion of deepbit just move to a different mining pool to protect the security of bitcoin  as a whole?

Not likely. They don't check the forum... ever.

Of course it is. Anyone mining at deepbit is doing their part to create an unhealthy network.

Why would you want PPS? PPS gives you the LEAST amount of money, plus Deepbit charges 10% fee on PPS!!
You can go to pools like btcguild, if you donate 2.5%, they give you instant payout as well. That beats the 10% fee by a lot -.-

I found pps better working for me (420mh/s) Today was like 2h round on deepbit. I got 0,6BTC, with PPS: 0,7BTC

Isn't that probably an edge case?  2 hours is a long round for deepbit, I believe.  The AVERAGE round length almost certainly results in a worse payout for PPS.  Mathematically isn't not possible that PPS with a 10% fee is better.  And unless you're in a tiny pool or only care about hour by hour amounts, the variance for non-PPS doesn't seem like enough to be a problem.

Then obviously, you have not been mining for very long, and or do not know about variance. You cannot compare PPS and Prop like this from ONE ROUND. At the very least compare for a week and then see.

They are having server issues right now, they are getting new ones on Wed. and Thurs. to deal with the load.

Switch to Swepool or some other pool for now.

This is pretty bad..btcmine down, btcguild down, bitcoins.lc down, everyone is flocking to deepbit. Not helping the situation.

Well, they are being silly. Why tempt fate when it's so easy to avoid such problems? Bitcoin may survive an attack, but will the public ever regain their trust? Let's not cut off our nose in spite of our face.

Well, most people probably don't know. It's not like everyone checks the forum every 10 minutes. Others may not even know about the danger of getting this much hash rate in one pool.

There are plenty of miners that use this forum that know. Enough to make a difference. They choose not to.

why tycho won't disable registration ?

"It's not like my hashing rate is rising, it's network block generation speed is low today which causes pie chart to look more scary than usual.

Create a good pool, make a better offer to bitcoin miners and they may switch. That's how competition works.
It's easy to make a pool with lower fee, there is even an open source pool software available. And that's not the only option.
Why not create more ? There will be a LOT of new miners soon.

Don't make me say my opinion on bitcoin security for the fourth time :)"

Is what Tycho says.

Because he is shortsighted about bitcoins future and cares most about the money he makes.  Which, ironically, will become worthless if even 1 single attack is perpetrated.  Unfortunately since blockchain forks aren't centrally reported, we'll never know what he's doing behind the scenes.

Sell btc imo.

He's making a large amount of money. Would you?

Well... I would. You can make a large amount of money with 30% of the hash rate, and the network is much healthier. Anyone who mines Bitcoin should promote a healthy network.

Unfortunately, for the sake of the network, we'll have to do this if [Tycho] continues to do nothing. Personally, I suggest that he double the pool's fee. It'd be a win-win for all of us.

I simply don't understand how someone who is making so much money from Bitcoin would ever let the network grow so unhealthy. You don't bite the hand that feeds.

He lowered the rates because deepbit went out to a ddos...and that was just for a few days. The fees are back up now, and yet more people join.

No, lack of a slice on the pie chart doesn't mean the pool is down. Usually it's just the front end.

They *could* verify a forged block allowing various addresses to double-spend coins.

Once the block is verified by their own pool (more than 50% verified it, so it MUST be legit, right?) then they have just "printed money".

They can repeat that as often as they'd like and there's very little anyone can do, other than drop out of their pool so they drop below 50% of the hashing power of the network, and can no longer forge blocks.

This is the major weakness in Bitcoin creation.
