Title: Iota and quantum computers (some news about NSA inside)
Post by: Come-from-Beyond on February 08, 2016, 11:33:09 PM
Maybe some of you heard about Iota and its resistance to quantum computers. Here are some recent news - https://www.deepdotweb.com/2016/02/08/nsa-switches-to-quantum-resistant-cryptography/. A funny part:

According the NSA, the following isn’t safe to use:
...
SHA-256
Can we trust that article on www.deepdotweb.com?

Please speak for yourself.

That article posted by CfB makes IOTA infinitely more interesting. If IOTA's tangle works, it could well be the future of crypto.

Can you explain why Iota is quantum resistant? What is the difficulty set to?

Iota uses Winternitz signing which is quantum-immune. For the other part check 4.3 of http://188.138.57.93/tangle.pdf, please.

No, we'll start with the "round" number of 19683. At every snapshot it will be changed from 1/3x to 3x depending on user PoW votes.

What do you do about spam? How many hashes (at that difficulty) per second can a desktop manage?

25 hashes per 1 MHz in average. Spam is welcome as long as it secures the tangle.
