Title: Avalon Asics delay or are the Chinese post offices open arround 9 pm on Sunday?
Post by: johnwhitestar on January 20, 2013, 01:12:30 PM
I was asking myself, and maybe there is somebody who knows exactly: are the Chinese post offices open at 9 pm on Sunday?
Because if they aren't it would mean that the Avalon asics wouldn't be shipped anywhere today in any case, except for those who are queueing in front of Avalon's gates :)

China Post is 7 days a week from 8:00 to 18:00. So it will not be open at 9 PM (21:00), but Sunday is not a concern.

By now, they are shipping as it is morning there.

They're using DHL which is not affected by when the post office is or isn't open.

They do work every day of the week but they won't pick up packages after 6pm (at least in Beijing) and my understanding is that SF do pretty much the same (my wife organises DHL deliveries once or twice per week for an international company here).

Does that apply even if you drop your consignment off/pick it up at their airport service point (I've actually done this on public holidays here)?

Also, if I recall correctly they were talking about using companies based out of Hong Kong/Shenzhen to handle the customs-related issues so it's possible that the first packages won't be direct-shipped (you don't want to risk shipping the majority of your units until you know for certain that there won't be customs issues at either end).

Not sure about that - and am not buying into any conspiracy theory stuff (and tip my hat off to the Avalon team).

Also things in Shenzhen and especially Hong Kong would be quite different to Beijing (will be heading down that way later this year).

I understand your point of view, and perhaps I'm too much pedantic, but from my point of view there is some difference between just saying "we are shipping" and actually to ship.

I guess the pedantic trait is something that a lot of people on this forum have (and I think OCD would be fairly common amongst members here too - am more guilty of the latter than the former myself) so the point is well understood but in the big picture I really don't think 1 day late even matters at all in comparison to being "months" overdue with still nothing to show.

From my point of view something is "shipped" once it's scanned into the system of the company handling delivery (or picked up by their couriers). Sometimes this means that it's not actually on a plane going anywhere yet but it's past the point where your supplier has any control over the delivery process any more.

I do think it's important to remember that Avalon stated months ago that shipping of the initial units would happen over a period of two weeks and that it could be affected by CNY.  Exporting a new product for the first time to multiple countries using multiple carriers is a nail-biting exercise in itself.

This is completely untrue for pretty much every bulk shipper for every carrier service. Appearance and allocation of package tracking number just means that the customer committed to pay for shipping. The tracking numbers are allocated online and the courier service can then reserve the resources in their logistic system. The actual packages can be stored inside a bulk container that will be opened and scanned only once it gets close to the destination.

I don't have actual experience with China, but I do with US, Europe and certain Pacific Rim locales. The "package tracking" is done in bulk by "manifest tracking" and there are specific exception codes used to mark situations where the "manifest" ended up being different than the "packages" inside a bulk container.

A weekend shipment should be delivered today if it was sent using Fedex, DHL or a similar express service.

So where are those Avalon Asics? They shipped them in a Warhammer 40k starship that got attacked by demons while in the warp? This seems the only logical explanation.

Maybe they sent it in a junk like Marco Polo. We can expect arrival on European shores in about 2015 then.
