Title: rampage III extreme northbridge overheating
Post by: jstarBTC on June 09, 2011, 12:55:36 PM
Hi all. I purchased a rampage 3 extreme to use with my 6990s but the northbridge is overheating. Some people with similar trouble are recommending replacijg the tim but since that is permanent im thinking about just conisdering another board. Question is. If its overheating with just one card. Even if i replace the tim with arctic silver will the passive sink be enough for all four cards? or am i just destroying a mb warranty for no good reason?

It's fine to replace the TIM; just be very careful while doing so. Also consider putting a small fan on the NB.

Don't worry about voiding the warranty, Replacing the TIM is common and not going to upset the manufacturer.

Figured out the issue. The heatsinks for the northbridge are on spring screws. I had very small standoffs so i think when i thegjtened down the motherboard it created a gap. I took out the mounting screws near the nb and now everything seems stable.

Up and running. Ill make a new thread but if anyone interested in a 4x 6990 story ,  ill be documenting the challenges  and solutions.

Oh yeah, ill mention that i got it working right after my order for a nb/sb water cooling kit went thru. So i will probably go ahead and install it. Deff spent more money on this than was necessary. The whole process was challenging.
