Title: Is 450W enough for a single 5830?
Post by: MonkeyThink on June 09, 2011, 01:17:51 PM
Hi All,

I have a question (my first, but probably not my last :)) ...

Having recieved the XFX Radeon GD 5830 I ordered a couple of days ago I'm now wondering if my power supply is going to cope?  My machine is a P4 3.2Ghz with a 450W power supply which has 4 x 4 pin molex connectors for peripherals.

I'm looking guidance on whether I will be able to use the two, dual 4 pin to 6 pin adaptors to power the GPU, which will take up all 4 connectors available from the power supply, and also power my HDD using a splitter?

Thanks
Monkey

I can't remember the brand.  I was going to write down the details and the power ratings before I left home this morning but I forgot :(

It's not a top brand but it's also not the cheapest one I could lay my hands on.  I had to replace the original PSU in the machine I build after I blew it when I was swapping things around some time back.

If you'r managing to power 2 x GPU's then i'm guessing I should be safe with one.

Thanks

Like phantastisch said - it totally depends on the brand. The amount of power you have is plenty. I was mining on a 5870 with a 250W for about a week until I got round to buying a better one ;D while my friend blew a 1000W brandless psu within couple of hours mining with 2x 5870

Alternatively there is a lightly used one of these on eBay for £25 ($40)

http://www.overclock.co.uk/product/PowerCool-650W-PC-650AUBA-Dual-12v-V22-80-Effici_6491.html

Anyone want to offer an opinion on this PSU?

Thanks

That's exactly the one my friend blew in two hours, except it was 1050W  ;D Don't buy PowerCool

Ok, thanks.  Glad I checked now.

I'm also watching a Corsair 650TX on eBay like this:

Maybe that would be better?

Corsair is great.
I personally would not buy a used psu, because their lifespan is estimated for certain amount of hours and you never know how long it's been used for and at what load.

For a single 5830 you should be fine with 450W, it's not a particularly hungry card.

Having said that, if you want a better PSU that won't cost the Earth, check out the XFX Pro 650W Core Edition.

I also don't recommend buying used PSU. The PSU is the most important part of your rig, bar none.

You will be fine. My rig with a 5850 and a quad core draws 290w at the wall.
