Title: Old wallet.dat now empty, can't recover? Post by: dallows on February 01, 2013, 11:38:30 PM I'll try to make it short and sweet. I had a mining machine that I stopped using a long time ago. With the increase in bitcoin value I decided it was time to sell my some 10-13 bitcoins that I had amassed. The computer that did the mining was basically stripped so I added the hard drive as a secondary in my main computer to get the wallet.dat off.
What I remember doing was copying the file off, installing the latest version of the official bitcoin-qt client, and letting it update. However it never showed my balance or previous transactions. The address it gives is this: 1UcQmNuMXaXVyiGozCKDmoGfPLB8XEyQW When I tried to use blockchain transaction history (or something similar can't remember the site) it doesn't return anything, like it was never used. I do believe I had a few different receiving addresses as well. I've tried exporting the private keys and uploading them to blockchain.info, no dice. If I use pywallet to get a list of all the private keys, and try to import just the one matching the above public address, it says it's not valid or something. I even made an image of the old hard drive and made it virtual, booted up with vitualbox and opened the bitcoin software, nothing, it's empty. Is there any small hope? Thanks for your time. How did you mine? Was it with a pool? Your BTC might still be there. Either than or you had it sent to another address. This address never received any bitcoins. I understand that it's coming up as zero, but then where did the coins go? No transaction records for that address ever.
It's the address that came up when I copied it over AND when I just launched the software from the untouched old machine. I even dumped the entire wallet.dat and tried importing the output to blockchain, still nothing. Just doesn't make any sense to me where it all went. Two possibilities: you didn't copy the old one into the correct directory, and/or you copied the wrong wallet entirely. Remember, each user account gets their own wallet, so if you logged into your virtual machine as a different user to the user who mined the coins (eg, Administrator when you weren't logged on as Administrator when you were mining), you'll be looking at an empty wallet. What operating system(s) are you using?

What operating system(s) are you using? There was only one user and one wallet file. The hard drive was untouched. I did everything bitcoin related from that one computer. I've already scoured the hard drive to find any additional files, including file recovery software. The wallet file I have was created in june 2011 and last modified oct 2011 which is probably about when I stopped mining. A new wallet wouldn't have that. Windows XP on the mining machine. Windows 7 on my current main computer. |
