Title: create/modify software for this forum
Post by: BTCConstruction on February 03, 2013, 04:38:21 AM
As it has now been several months since this was posted and nobody had made a successful bid, I believe now is as good a time as any to take a new approach.

I feel this project would be better suited to an open source collaborative model of development instead of a winner takes all bidding war.

I have registered bitcointalk as an organization on github and will build a basic framework for a forum.

From there features that theymos and users want can be added.

The first step of this process is of course coming up with a core framework, but to do this will require some organization of the features people want that would be well... core.

Toward this end I have started to organize information necessary to build the core.

I would appreciate feedback from both developers and users. (Please post feedback here).

The best open source forum software (for the core) is MyBB.
http://www.mybb.com
IMHO, if you spend time with MyBB it is almost impossible to consider SMF or phpBB as serious contenders.

ps.
Building a quality forum from scratch is almost as silly as working to eliminate a bounty worth over $70,000.   :D

^^^ Person who never spent much time with MyBB detected.

< Back on topic >

Open-source does not always mean free of charge. I think the huge bounty is amazing and a cooperative effort could include a proposal to win and share* the bounty.
*I know that sharing involves "ugly details", but it's still an interesting idea.

The goal isn't to eliminate the bounty.

The goal is to break it into smaller pieces which individual developers can actually reasonably achieve.

You should take a look at CIYAM, the thread is here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=132006.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=132006.0).

If you follow the link in the thread to CIYAMopen, you can see how all the tasks are broken down into individual bounty's.

http://www.discourse.org/ just became public today.  It's based on Ruby, so it doesn't meet a lot of the requirements, but it uses PostgreSQL at least :)

RoR and just released, yea that sounds like a great idea... Come on use your head, the bugs in that software must be off the charts. Even if it some how doesn't have any bugs, then how do we even know it will handle the traffic, if it hasn't been stress tested this would be the worst idea ever.
