it unlocks a few minutes after your first post. So just wait a little bit and check it again. you should be all set.

Tip: See the rank under your name. "newbie' and above gets you the PM function

Before you ask any more of the commonly asked Newbie questions, take some time to read through the threads that are pinned to the top of the Newbie forum.  Especially this one:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=15958.0

. . . only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts (new topics or replies).

If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=15911.0).

Also:
- Newbies cannot upload their own avatars.
- You must have made one post in order to send PMs.
- You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature.

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted. (The system automatically checks every 10 minutes and promotes people as appropriate.)

Unfortunately some newbies don't read the T&C part where it states the restrictions involved. Theymos should put it in big red letters.  :D

Not enough, it should also be flashing to catch the necessary attention:

Such as those who grew up in the days before AdBlock and trained themselves to subconsciously ignore colourful flashing banners?
