Title: Syrian forces battle ISIS fighters inside Palmyra
Post by: zenitzz on March 26, 2016, 05:27:09 PM
Syrian government forces have seized three neighborhoods inside Palmyra, a town with famed Roman-era ruins that fell to the Islamic State group last May, state media reported Saturday.

Syrian troops and allied militiamen backed by Russian airstrikes have taken up positions in the three neighborhoods that are part of the modern town, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group.

Palmyra, affectionately known as the "bride of the desert," used to attract tens of thousands of tourists every year. IS drove out government forces in a matter of days and later demolished some of the best-known monuments in the UNESCO world heritage site. The extremists believe ancient ruins promote idolatry.

Good news really.
It's obvious that ISIS loosing this war, territory and people.
Real peace in Syria and Iraq can't start before ISIS is defeated.
Of course, still is a very long way to lasting peace and the return of millions of refugees to their homes but this is first step toward this goal.

they weren't the bad guys , your media showed them as bad guys till the whole world realized the real threat
IT'S NOT THE GOVERNMENT TROOPS ,, IT'S THE  ARMY !!!
what's happening now was happening before , but the terrorists were called freedom fighters
Syria needs to change but the army is a red line , these people are suffering to protect others

Yes congratulations to the Syrian Army and the Russian air force! And now we can thank to President Vladimir Putin and his brave servicemen for enabling the defeat of ISIS in Syria.

The odds of ISIS invading the USA is extremely slim. Europe would be more likely as it is closer to their homeland.

I highly doubt ISIS would be able to take over a city in the US, much less any significant amount of land.

Palmyra has very big natural gas sources in Syria and both side want it. But unfortunately %65 percentage of Syrian sources were under hypotec of Russia in exchange of Russian military existence in Syria. It is claimed that Putin and Asad agreed on %65 of Syrian underground sources. Time will show whether it will get them.

It's great to see isis lose ground but really! borders need to be redrawn in the entire region to see some lasting progress.

Islamic Army decides date of begining land operations in Syria. They will sweep away all Isis forces and put them under soil.

Do you mean those saudi and UAE cripples? They got their asses kicked by the rebels in Yemen, however houthi fighters are less numerous and less well funded/armed than IS. I think such an invasion would be a weapons handover instead of real fighting.

What a cast of weirdos and screwballs.

BEIRUT // A Syrian fighter who appeared in a gruesome video cutting out the organs of a regime soldier and appearing to eat them has been shot dead by rival rebels, a monitoring group has said.

Known by his nom de guerre Abu Sakkar, the rebel reportedly joined Al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat Al Nusra about a year ago.

Rival rebels “assassinated Khaled Al Hamad, who was known as Abu Sakkar and who was a military commander in Al Nusra, by gunning him down" in the northwestern province of Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said late on Tuesday.

In May 2013, Abu Sakkar appeared in a video that showed him appearing to eat the heart of a dead regime soldier, sparking an international outcry and condemnation from the mainstream Syrian opposition.

At the time, he was fighting in a rebel brigade in central Homs province.

“He was likely killed in a settling of accounts" between Al Nusra, which dominates much of Idlib province, and other hardline rebels in the area, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The Syrian conflict began as a peaceful uprising against president Bashar Al Assad in March 2011 but swiftly escalated into an armed rebellion after his regime unleashed a brutal crackdown.

Many Syrians became radicalised, and human rights groups have accused all sides in the fighting of committing atrocities.

The Houthis are only lightly armed, but there is no dearth of manpower. According to reliable reports, the militia numbers up to 300,000 individuals. The vast majority of them are inexperienced, but they are ready to die to defend their homeland from the Salafist / Wahhabi invaders. If they could get their hands on some of the sophisticated weaponry, then the Saudis will be shitting in their pants.

The U.S. needs to be fighting ISIS along with Syria and Russia. Those ISIS terrorist destroys everything. They not only murder innocent civilians, but destroy historical landmarks. They are the enemy that should be obliterated.
