Hello everybody,

I'm curious what percent of your net worth you keep in bitcoin, especially as this thread grows and takes on a life of its own over the months and years.

When doing the math for yourself, sum up the value of all the assets you own: your bitcoins, liquid assets (cash), illiquid assets (house, car, etc), gold/silver, 401k, investments, and your bank accounts. Divide your bitcoins' worth by the sum total and report back here! A spreadsheet is helpful.

I recently did a survey of my personal finances, and to my surprise, I'm at 0.832%. I spend much more than 0.832% of my time thinking about bitcoin, so this made me wonder why I'm so fascinated by something I have so little stake in. I plan to increase my holdings over time, until bitcoins make roughly 10-15% of the total. Of course, as bitcoins grow in value, this will happen slowly and gradually, but I've made the conscious decision to migrate some of my worth from dollars and stocks to bitcoin, which I trust and support much more than the US financial system.

What are your thoughts? Why are you (or aren't you) more or less invested in bitcoin, on a personal level? How did you get to be so invested (or so little-invested) in bitcoin?

EDIT: Also count bitcoin-related-investments as bitcoin as well, since they can be quickly liquidated back into bitcoin. Thanks!

Should we count things like bitcoins realated investments (such as shares of SatoshiDice) as bitcoin or not?

I put about 5% of my income into bitcoins every week. I move half of them to a paper wallet and pretend they don't exist anymore. I like to play with the other half  :)

I started with 1% and then it became 7% in about a year.

50% or more, true believer  :)

People say you shouldn't invest more than you can afford to lose - but with bitcoin I may suddenly think that the value of the bitcoins I bought cheaply may be worth more than I want to lose.  It's a strange psychological position to be in.

If your assets have appreciated, it might be a good idea to sell some off to lock in your gains and diversify into other investments.

I have no idea how to calculate what percent my bitcoin holdings are because my net worth is negative.  Fucking student loans.

In my calculation, I didn't factor in my student loans either. I just summed up all the things I own and found my bitcoin holdings as a percent of that, but I suppose that isn't precisely "net worth".

Hmm... interesting. If you divide a number by 0, well, it can't be done. However, dividing a positive number (your btc) by a negative number (your net worth) you get a negative number.

But. Your net worth is calculated by summing your total assets and then subtracting your liabilities.

Maybe you could calculate the ratio of your bitcoin holds to debt.

My asset holdings less my debt is negative (due to student loans), so ~ 50 BTC / 0 = ∞ (or 100%, if we want to be practical).

Around 1%. Because I do not have the privilege of being able to allot a significant percentage of my worth into speculative investments.

On the other hand, my Bitcoin holdings constitute around 25% of what I have invested in any kind of instruments or currency.

I am confused, I think you mean to say you bought around $2 ?  Or did bitcoin used to be 90% of your holdings?

I have been telling everyone I know about Bitcoin since I first heard about it in 4/'01. They all laughed at me when the market crashed (thankfully I chose the mining route instead of purchasing directly), but after last year many of them are starting to take a serious look at it. A friend of mine was an investment broker for ML and has been keeping an ever closer eye on it since August.


Also, do we include mining gear?

About 25%, but at least 70% of it comes from Bitcoin directly or indirectly.

I keep like %50, but that is mostly because I use most of my paycheck for other things I need besides keeping a savings.

About 20-25%.

I'm long-term bullish on Bitcoin as a technology, but since its corresponding market is still foetal, I know there's going to be all sorts of fluctuations on the way up, many of them severe.

So I keep enough Bitcoin (and fiat) in exchanges to profit from those fluctuations.

That said, I recognize that I might be too starstruck by the Bitcoin concept to properly determine its worth as an asset, so I haven't invested any more heavily than that - I prefer to put most of my savings into sectors that correspond to the things I'd like to buy with them eventually (e.g. I'm saving for a condo, don't want to lose buying power, so invest in REITs).

That strategy of saving for things in related products makes a lot of sense.  Too bad you're just trading paper that has a nonzero chance of being unwound in a nasty fashion.

Will sell 1/3 @ 100 --- 1/3 @ 1000 and keep the rest to spend as BTC :D

Fair enough.  I don't keep any funds on an exchange longer than I need to, but I don't daytrade anymore.

I started about a year ago at about 20% and am now up to about 85% due to both increasing my amount of fiat injected in and appreciation. I am relatively young still and I know this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I am comfortable with starting over if it explodes because the possible benefit is just too high.

It clearly means April of 2001. Oh, wow, that must mean that Steamboat is Satoshi! (Or maybe Satoshi stole the idea of bitcoin from Steamboat?)

I love the old folks who take the time to understand bitcoin!


Real estate is not an investment in fiat and not likely to be hyperinflation doomed, those properties would just be worth $1,000,000,000 instead of their original $500,000. And likely the same scenario for the investment accounts, assuming our friend here has made some wise decisions for those accounts. His interest in bitcoins suggests that he did  ;)

But more bitcoins is always always a good idea.

Put plenty of funds into mining rigs and BTC so it's definately a significant investment / testing for me.
