Title: Buying stuff with paypal nowadays
Post by: yoona on April 04, 2016, 07:10:43 AM
Let's be honest, there is a small repulsion from the btc community towards btc paypal because of the refunds,... But, let's be honest a second time, Paypal is just an easy way to pay with online. But I'm having trouble finding some decent markets/sites/services that still accepts paypal.

So yea, my question: where do you guys still use paypal nowadays?

Yeah it is way easier to pay online with Paypal. You really can't pay with Bitcoins at most of the online web shops. But with Paypal you can pay almost at most of the online web shops.

I do still use Paypal for payment once a while when I shop on eBay... but there are many more online stores other than Paypal...

Paypal is for lazy people (like me, sometimes) without need to think too much- as the service is being paid by the fees and unfavourable exchange rates...

I don't know what type of sites/services you're referring to but I don't think PayPal adoption by merchants is slowing down at all. Bitcoin is great as an alternative/experimental payment method but I don't think any mainstream site will even consider accepting only Bitcoins. There are certainly plenty of other payment processors besides PayPal but none of those have market share anywhere close to that of PayPal.

I only use it to pay hostgator for hosting (I'm in Europe, and if i use a debit card, I get charged a handling fee because hostgator is a "foreign" site. Paypal solves this problem because no handling fee (and obviously if they accepted bitcoin, that would solve it too).

I don't use paypal.Because there's no reason to.
I never had and never will be a customer of them! The way they handle and deal with your personal information should be reason enough for everyone to avoid this payment service.

My answer is, "nowhere". Ever since they blocked my account and lock all the funds I had in it, due to me relocating to a country that it's against their rules (the day I logged in from another country - Iran to be exact, the next day my account was useless already with all the funds inside it), I never looked back again. I went back in forth with them through email and they never refunded it to me even though I provided all the proofs that I literally am a dual citizen. Paypal used to be good when it came out back in the day, but I can't really see it in the future in most markets, but on the other hand BTCitcoin will surely be much more widely used.

because paypal is accepted in all web, all websites, all marketplaces and shopping sites, and also all earning sources, freelancing sites and other services paying with paypals. some of them recently started using bitcoin but majority of them still working with paypal.

yest it is true that paypal is being used in most of web markets and other sources.
but I personally don't like using paypal. I love to pay with bitcoin every time. I hardly find bitcoin friendly sites to buy and sell things and earn bitcoins.

repulsion is a bit too harsh to say about bitcoin's lack of refund. the lack of refund is actually a good feature in bitcoin. and for purchases it is the best option for the merchants because they will feel secure and the customer also will feel safe as long as the merchant is reputable.

for example i don't think twice when paying with bitcoin for hosting!

and as for paypal i will never use them again unless i don't have any other option (no other payment method or no other similar service)

There is no need not to use PayPal if you are dealing with online store or reputable merchant with long history of completed successfully deals.
As far as I know PayPal did not collect any fee from you if you buy stuff online. Instead seller is taxed with the fee.
But you have to be cautious of using PayPal to deal with random people, in that case using PP could be problematic and I wouldn't recommend using PP for it.

I don't have any problem using Paypal, actually I prefer paying with Paypal and avoid any other payment method, even one time CC cards, it's much harder or impossible to get your money back when there's a problem if you use any method other than Paypal.

And I don't see a lack of places accepting Paypal, it's probably the most used payment processor worldwide except China.

I think it is a mistake to make a comparison between Paypal and Bitcoin. We are doin that because Bitcoin can be used as a payment method just like paypal. However, there is an important thing to remember, Bitcoin is a lot more than just a payment method. Paypal might be offering users more than Bitcoin does, that doesn`t make Paypal better. One can use Bitcoin as an investment, trading, perhaps even saving but it is not possible to do that with paypal. Paypal is simply a safe payment method. Usually very expensive one. We should be able to see the difference.

Yeah, paypal has firmed their roots on a vast area on online transactions besides there are a number of good payment systems online available, but now a time will come when some bitcoin accepting markets become more famous then bitcoin will be introduced to everyone, and then is a chance that every site adopt bitcoin system.

Accepting paypal as a merchant can be a risky business, depending what you are selling of course and to where you are sending.  There is just so many hacked accounts out there, you only have to spend about 2 minutes on deep web to find hundreds of hacked accounts for sale.  From a buyers perspective it is pretty bullet proof.

I think eBay and PayPal go together like peanut butter & jelly.... and that is about the only place where PayPal is still applicable. We are not in the business here {on this forum} to promote PayPal,

so let's stick to the reason this forum was created and leave other older and outdated payment methods to do their own promotions. Those centralized services with their rules and

regulations and banning or disabling of accounts for stupid reasons, should have been replaced a long time ago. Let's hope Bitcoin & OpenBazaar will have that same success in future.

I prefer to pay with my PayPal account for online stuff than to reveal my debit card details to the websites as with PayPal I am just giving the merchants an email account and my data is safe. Fortunately my country is in a good standing with PayPal so I haven't had any problems since I opened my first account with them more than 10 years ago. Even though I am doing a great share of my online shopping with Bitcoin PayPal is more convenient than debit cards where Bitcoin isn't accepted.

That's true. I never heard or read about PayPal chargebacks earlier and I've been using PayPal for about 6-7 years without any issue. I came to this forum and read so many people claiming to be chargedback and I feel this is common with those trading in bitcoins or on ebay as mostly scammers use this to their advantage. PayPal is the easiest way for many users to sell or buy stuff online but due to people with a low life, they have totally ruined it.

Edit: I use PayPal to sell my gift cards on this forum itself and only accept it from trustworthy users. Else, I can suggest you to use cardpool or other gift card websites to buy gift cards and there are several other websites that accept PayPal as a main payment method. Even Ebay uses it. I haven't ever found it difficult to pay with PayPal and recently a shopping website also introduced it as a payment option.

Have you checked this: https://shopping.paypal.com/stores

How? What can Paypal offer to pay an extra fee while paying with bitcoins? They can make a transaction refundable, like Paypal, but that makes bitcoin unreliable. I see no reason to use Paypal as company in the middle of a transaction.

While it's true that it's pretty easy making transactions  with paypal, it's not much harder with bitcoin either, you just have to have bitcoin debit card. I know it's

Going to be honest:  There is no reason for me to buy anything with bitcoin.  I would have to exchange fiat for bitcoin, spend it, and then the merchant is just going to convert it back to fiat.  It's completely unnecessary.  I buy bitcoin to hold, as a store of value and as a speculative instrument.

I definitely use PayPal more often to buy things and I've found pen shops online who take it (I collect pens).

And you don't have to use escrow.

Most merchants or company prefer credit cards, paper money or bank transfer than paypal anyway ::)
Also, many people don't like paypal since there are many better choice.

I have never used paypal, don't intend to do it in future too and frankly don't understand how companies are accepting it with its major flaws such as cashback, which one can't be protected against if done using stolen credit cards.

The only reason I'd use it if there were no other payment options available and if I am selling something, would never want to be at the receiving end of it.

BTW, this question belongs in service discussion, if not off-topic. (Not reporting it though because no one cares.)

you mean ChargeBack, cashback is something else. and i don't think companies especially the big ones have any trouble with it otherwise they would have removed the method from their payment page.

the trouble is for the regular sellers who will be screwed if they get a chargeback and can never win the argument.

I think there are still a lot out there. But most are at credit cards. I guess you are looking always at Amazon and they are not affiliated by Paypal. Ebay is and there are lots of items there that are for sale.

You can go here (https://shopping.paypal.com/stores)

I think there are many sites that accept paypal as a payment option. I still often see the paypal logo on top of their site. it proves they still accept paypal. I often see it on various sites, including many sellers on ebay. still using paypal for the system

I am really surprised that you have trouble finding merchants accepting paypal. almost all the merchants I have came across use paypal, on the opposite it's hard for me to find someone who doesn't accept paypal.

But what if the merchant don’t have access to paypal?

In case if you want to buy a product from a specific merchant which is unable to get from any other merchant and you have paypal and want to pay with paypal while the merchant do not have paypal because of their country is not allowed for paypal.

Then you both have to choose a currency and a payment system to which you both have access, so bitcoin is a best solution.

If possible I skip Ebay and go to Alibaba or Aliexpress now. It is cheaper and promotes competition. Ebay as a market leader has a terrible website, the search for example differs per country you are from. For example, if I use ebay.com I get different results searching in China than when I use ebay.de.

Big companies such as Google, Amazon or Steam don't accept paypal anymore.

People can still purchase apps and digital content on Google Play using Paypal payment method from their Google account.

But only depends on the supported country and my country is not listed there lol.
Same is the case with my country and hence I asked a friend to buy an app for me with his credits.

@OP: PayPal is the most used payment option these days and it has its own store from where we can purchase any stuff. Bestbuy also has introduced it as a payment option. Walmart too accepts PP payments.
Yes, agree with your opinion, but they have limited their products to only those countries to where paypal is limited, and whenever they felt bitcoin as reliable and wanted to spread their products to the whole world they will prefer bitcoin.

Sorry about that. People might think that stolen Paypal accounts and bank accounts can be used to buy stuffs on their website. But they are wrong. I do have some friends that are trying to do some 'black hat' stuffs on that website but they just can't do it. The only problem with bitcoins is that the value of each coin changes almost every few minutes. Well, it'll only be a problem if the price of an item is fixed on USD or EUR.

I prefer to pay with my Pay Pal account for online stuff than to reveal my debit card details to the websites as with PayPal I am just giving the merchants an email account and my data is safe. Fortunately my country is in a good standing with PayPal so I haven't had any problems since I opened my first account with them more than 10 years ago. Even though I am doing a great share of my online shopping with Bitcoin PayPal is more convenient than debit cards where Bitcoin isn't accepted.

May I ask a counter question? where do you find PayPal not being accepted? In fact I have to search where can I spend my bitcoin because PayPal is so widespread

I partly disagree. The repulsion is not because of the refunds alone. It's also because of paypal's tendency to freeze funds arbitrarily out of constructed AML-concerns. Paypal is an obedient slave to government and spies on its costumers in the worst possible way.

Also the fees are quite high, so transacting via wire transfer or physical cash is often a cheaper alternative.

I really hope that Bitcoin will put an end to the paypal mania. Yes, I'm a passionate paypal hater... :D

ya.ya.yo!

I only use Paypal when occasionally buying something from ebay , since I live in a developed EU country I use it often as it saves me time. Still Paypal fees are enormous when compared with bitcoin and I don't like Paypal very much, but is because of its widespread I am using it when buying something online. Unfortunately very few websites like ebay accept bitcoin as a payment method but I am hoping in the future bitcoin becomes more widespread than Paypal.

I prefer PayPal for international transactions where there is no other option available for transfer in certain stores which has got tie-up with PayPal as its payment gateway.

Paypal, eBay are ecosystem of their own. Not possible to dislodge them.

The wildcard here is Amazon with its own payment system that never really got popular.

If Bitcoin community could sway Amazon to accept Bitcoins, then that will be a game changer.

Ebay is the only way I shop with paypal, but there is also a gaming site that I use that pays me in US dollars via paypal.  I also fund that account via paypal.  That is a way to transfer US dollars pretty easily.

Paypal is just easy to pay with and so many stores accept them which makes it more usefull. Bitcoin still has just a couple of stores that let you pay with Bitcoins but there are coming more and more.

We cannot ignore the fact that Paypal is more popular and still in demand, only reason is bitcoin is not known by majority of people yet and not accepted everywhere.

We all want to use bitcoin like paypal, but the current scenario is not allowing us to do so, and I think we need to wait for some more time so that bitcoin gets accepted everywhere.

Well, I don't really like to use bitcoin exactly like paypal but I do want to use bitcoin as something BETTER than paypal. The good thing about paypal is that nearly every site has adopted the use of paypal and we do hope that nearly the same or more businesses, be it online or real world, would adopt bitcoins.

I only use gaypal on ebay because it's almost mandatory there.

I've been waiting for years for an alternative to ebay and gaypal.

I hope I don't have to wait much longer.

I hate paypal but sometimes I need to use it for some website and customers who don't have bitcoin.

I don't know why people still using paypal on most of there transactions. Paypal has high fees and can froze your account anytime they like. And withdrawal to banks takes 4-7 days. Where as I can withdraw bitcoin to bank isntantly without fee.

Paypal has a bad rap for online person to person deals because of the protection schemes in place. It's far to easy to say your account was hacked and reverse a transaction.

I sold some digital codes to a guy. He later claimed his account was hacked and asked for a reveral. Fortunately, I had a seller protection. So I did not have to refund.

You were lucky!

How much did you pay for seller protection and does seller protection waived the buyers right for refunds?
