Title: Americans and Canadians might need visas for Europe

Americans and Canadians might need visas for Europe

Be prepared! You might need a visa for your next European holiday or business trip.
The European Union is considering requiring Americans and Canadians to apply for visas, even if they only want to come for a short break.
So why the tougher line? European officials say they may suspend a visa waiver program for the U.S. and Canada because they still require citizens of some EU countries to apply for a visa.
While Americans and Canadians only need a passport when visiting the EU, visitors to the U.S. from Poland, Croatia, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania need a visa. Romanians and Bulgarians also need visas for Canada.
"The objective here is to achieve full visa waiver reciprocity for citizens of all member states and this is a priority for the European Union," said Mina Andreeva, a spokesperson for the European Commission.
Canadian officials said Canada's visa policy is not based on reciprocity.
"Rather, Canada must be satisfied that countries meet its criteria for a visa exemption," said a spokesperson from the department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
"Canadian officials in Ottawa and Brussels have and continue to be heavily engaged in a very positive, ongoing dialogue with Romania, Bulgaria and the European Commission on this issue," the spokesperson added.
The U.S. government did not respond to CNNMoney's request for comment.

I do not see anything strange in the attitude of EU,if USA and Canada citizen travel to all EU countries without having to ask the visa
the same rule should apply to all EU members when travel to this countries.

Very interesting news, thank you for sharing :)
I'm from Croatia and visited USa several times.
It was always difficult to get USa visa. So much time and preparation needed, cost etc.
I know that last a few years our politicians tried to solve this problem directly with USA government but withoutr much sucess.
It seems that main problem is to much failed applications for USA visa in Croatia.
It looks only way to solve it in short time will be with support and help from EU.

I don't see a problem with requiring a Visa for people traveling from every country. why should anyone be entering another country without being checked out at that country.

That won't happen. There are too many luxury shops and hotels which enjoy American customers all over Europe. Nothing shall be done which could make their coming less easy. There are also many people talking about removing the need of a visa to Chinese travelers, because they're the biggest spenders in high end shops.

Still a high amount in Canada and States that can point to a parent with U.K connection. Always put off getting dual starting to think it was a good thing.
Canada is still part of the common wealth so this would be interesting to watch.

How does it work for North Americans at present? Do they have to answer a few questions visa waiver style before being let in or do they just swan past?

I would've though a visa would make it smoother if that was the case. I'd rather sort my shit out before setting off.

Overall though I don't care. I've hardly ever come across a single American anywhere in Europe. Let's get more Chinese in with their lovely cash.

In that case, Visa should be made mandatory for everyone. Now the European Union is mulling Visa-free travel for the Turkish citizens, and in two or three months time, the Turks will be able to travel to any of the EU member nations without a Visa. What is the meaning of this? Do the EU authorities think that the citizens of US and Canada are more prone to terrorism and other crime, when compared to the Turkish citizens?

I think its good idea everyone should pass the same procedure,if they need to secure their self they should need to treat everyone equally

I think Americans and Canadians already have no issues in getting the visa for Europe and surrounding countries.

This seems like a bad way to go about business if say the Brexit happens they will need all the help they can get in staying above water. So limiting people with potentially the most common background heritage seems odd.

So we are turning on allies now for what reason? You think fighting side by side would have earned the right to travel inside each others Country without visas, same issue with the American borders but they seem to have issues within state to state that make it pretty crazy to navigate through.

Last I heard people in Europe need a visa to travel to the US. Not sure about Canada but I imagine it is the same. It seems only sensible to run it both ways for better security checks, especially with a lot of unvetted refugees entering Europe.
