Post by: Viet on April 15, 2016, 04:19:11 AM
I'm 24 years old, and a freshman in college. i major in criminal justice and found out from a current police officer that the major is useless. In my area all you need to be a cop is to finish a term in the criminal just academy. I want to major in something thats has good job prospects since nothing really appeals to me right now. I'm taking all my core classes this semester I now I really need to figure out what u want to do. Helppp

No. I graduated at 18 and went into the workforce right after. Decided to go back last year and get a degree.

Stay the course.  The police officer is right, a degree in criminal justice is useless.  You'll get all the info and skills you need in the academy.  Until then, enjoy college

Couldn't have said it better my-self. Choices like this, you got to make on your own. When you do what you like, you will enjoy doing it. Speaking from experience here. Every major has it's usage and the main one being knowledge.

Computer engineering, Big data analysis, Information Security, Clean energy, Artificial Intelligence, Mass communications, Real Estate, Accountancy

But the truth is , find your passion, without a passion for your major, everything will seem very minor in the long run

Thank for the tips guys. My passion is law enforment, but my ultimate goal is to be a game warden or marine patrole (officers that enfenforce regulations on the coast). But as one person has said, I'd learn everything in the academy and I feel it would be a waste of time learning something that id probably learn again. IT sounds challenging but the job prospects and salary is very attractive.

I would put it this way for you. When you reach the prime of your life, everyone would have basic knowledge of coding and IT, where it becomes something like learning english or math in elementary school. I would strongly encourage learning some form of coding like python or c# or java, it teaches more than just coding, making programs, it developes critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Marine patrol sounds interesting to me. Im sure during law enforcement you would have free time too, why not code some games or learn some stuff on edx during your rest time. Who knows you may be the one coming up with a great idea to simply and improve the enforcement workflow while on the job in the future.

If law enforcement is right up your alley, Im sure it would be pretty much linked to learn of scammers and phishers and the like performing big so called scams online. Who knows you may be working in a cyber security enforcement job years down and enjoying it while having fun too?

I think any courses in computer programming are going to be useful for now and in the future if you have any interest in that.

The major would be fine, if you decide you want to know more about it. However if you want to get major in completely different sphere, I would suggest programming, as people now earn really a lot on it. However you should decide if you really like it, as programming is not for everybody. I was trying to start learning it, however it is definitely not my cup of tea, and doesn't matter how much I would like to work in it, I wont, as I cannot do it really good. What I really do good is write essays for money (http://www.writemyessay24h.org/writing-essays-for-money) , so I will continue doing what I like. I wish you to find your cup of tea ;) Good luck!

Security/Policing is a job that will be obsolete in a few years.   :-\

https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/16/07/05/1714258/uber-hires-a-robot-to-patrol-its-parking-lot-and-its-way-cheaper-than-a-security-guard

$7/hour to hire a robot with night vision to patrol an area.  That price includes all maintenance.

viet, you better gotta enroll in Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, after getting a degree in computer engineering, then programming; IMO you can have a high wage and even be able to participate in Apple's system on a chip and then make the buyers of iPhone speechless as you created a great chip as a 'junior developer' . :)

in a nutshell: go all in computer engineering and go TSMC.

You future is fully based on your major course. You should choose the most relevant one from your area of interest; it will help you to complete your tasks perfectly and can show your talents in your field. I read an article on the major courses for academic students written by buy dissertation online (http://customthesis.org/services/Dissertation-Writing-Services). It will help you to take a decision on this problem.

Since you love law enforcement, why not take a course pertaining to law enforcement. There are many of them, ask your course adviser.

It's true that there is a lot of money in IT, but don't choose a career based on ONLY money. You will end up feeling sooooo bored.

I got some bad news brah if you're 24 and still a freshman in university - most people I knew were done that chit by age 21, maximum.  People from countries with 3 year bachelor degrees sometimes finish at 19 / 20.

Most university degrees are pretty useless too unless you intend on going to graduate school (graduate degree or law / accounting) or want to be a sexpat teacher in Asia.

As for people recommending studying computers - most of the people I know who work in that industry built careers with just experience + portfolios and it's arguably not worth spending a fortune to get a paper which says Computer Science on it.  Especially with the alternate market like it is, I think you'ld be spending tuition money on new cryptos and gambling that they'll make you some money.
