The article stated:

Quote
10% of respondents

It's 10% of respondents... not 10% of Americans.

A respondent is a person who participated in the polll.

That site sucks ass, loaded with ads and silly "click to read more" garbage.   Don't know if it's fake news but the journalism is questionable.

What happens when you do experience identity theft? Does it screw up your life for a long time or is it all taken care of by the banks and stuff?

It can and have ruined the life of many, which is why I am way careful and almost avoid any services which asks to provide IDs online, whether it be exchanges, casinos etc. Identity thieves can use your personal information to take loans, credit, goods or services, can be used for money laundering, terrorism, phishing, buy drugs, guns, other illegal materials and repercussions for that could be devastating. So be careful with whom you share your personal information online.

First of all I highly doubt that even 1% of americans owns bitcoin, 10% Americans maybe know what bitcoin is.
And it is clearly stated in that article that 10% of bitcoin users who were asked this question used it as a method of avoiding identity theft.
There is problem with determining real numbers when it comes to bitcoin users so I don't think polls and questionnaire are good enough to cover it.

Surely if you can prove it wasn't actually you then none of that should affect your life?

Bitcoin is often referred to as a way to avoid taxes and conduct illegal activity online. However, a recent report by Harris Poll on behalf of the American Institute of CPA shows that 10% of respondents use Bitcoin to avoid identity theft during tax time.

This sentence doesn't even make any sense.
There is no source cited, so one can't even go to the "report" to get additional info to understand what is the correct meaning.
Poorly substantiated, poorly written article.

It is definitely not fake news, one of the attractive features of bitcoins is the anonymity.

It is fake news and this is a old thread.
Bitcoin does not have anonymity.
Don't post about things that you have no knowledge of.

i don't think so. i think these are just the wrong news spreading by the people. there is no reality in such kind of new. i think they can do this even in USD why they feel the need to do it in bitcoin. i think at local level it do not carry so much importance.

i have no idea about this that either it is a false news or fact. but if they feel convenient and they really feel safe themselves by using bitcoin then defiantly they will do so. but i think that is not such a big issue. because many criminals uses USD and other currencies for their activities.

i dont think that they will really do it. because i dont think that the American thieves are so advance that they can use bitocin to hide themself from police. i think is not a good idea.

my personal view is that it will be totally fake news. because they cannot sell anything they have stolen from someone because it is more easy to find the person as compare to other people who are not using bitcoin.

yes it is true. and i think they will not feel the need to send or receive the money through bitoin. although if we talk about the the big big smuggler then it is possible that they will use bitcoin for their money transaction.

here in our area we have no tax on silver or gold while buying or selling in open market. therefore i do not think that there will be any tax on silver or gold while buying it in bitcoin. and may be the govt impose tax in future.

but i dont think that the anonymity is so effective for the thieves. they cannot carry the stuff through bitcoin they have to carry it using other local ways, i think bitcoin is effective for smuggler, because anonymity carry meaning for them.

Bitcoin anonymous? It's easier to hide you on PayPal rather than cleaning Bitcoin cash, trust me. Considering that Bitcoin transactions can always be linked.

no i am not agree with you, bitcoin is anonymous and that is its beauty, i dont think that its transaction may have some hidden link, if it is so then why those countries where bitcoin is illegal government take action against these accounts.

that may be true because to me all kind of currencies should be use for illegal activities and may be the bitcoin also, but it is not the fault of bitcoin i think the local police are responsible to stop such kind of illegal activities, because if they are not using bitcoin then they will find any other source but they will continue their illegal activities.

Just another click bait!

Giving my opinion on your topic, yes it is possible especially that bitcoin is more safer for people who are into illegal activities.  Bitcoin does not exposes or include the names everytime there was a transactions.  So it is easy, safe, and much more comfortable for people with illegal activities to use bitcoin as their mode of payments.

Identity theft which could be, using other people's name to hide their real identity is possible.

That is for sure.  Bad people especially those who wants to be rich would do anything just to have many money and have a luxurious life.  And it applies to anything not just bitcoin.  Although it is much more easier for them to do illegal activities since bitcoin is hassle free and really good in concealing your identity.

i believe there is still more people that will be a good person and not thief and do illegal activity. maybe in out there, bitcoin is used for illegal activities but i am sure that its more positive activities that people do while they use bitcoin.

and for the link, its only 10% americans not all americans, so this will not be the same, and i still believe that many people will using bitcoin for good purpose which is to make money.

yes i am also agree with you and there is no doubt this, as using bitcoin can give me a benefit that they will remain anonymous and will not declose to any one, therefore i think bitcoin is the best option with them to use,

yes that can be right there is no doubt about this because bitcoin has the  property anonymous and people must be taking advantage of this property and may be using it for illegal activities.
if the government know the reality then why not they take such kind of steps through which they can stop them from using bitcoin for illegal activities, the government should take such step through which they can stop the illegal activities, for examples if some people are using it for buying illegal weapons then they should stop the transport of illegal weapons if they cannot stop purchasing them.
