Title: A possible up side to ASIC (Other than the obvious)
Post by: mjc on February 20, 2013, 02:57:17 AM
Well other than a more secure network, for the first few weeks as new ASIC hit the network and blocks are found a little faster than normal confirmations will go quicker to, correct?  If I understand things correctly short block discovery from an abnormally low difficulty will allow for quicker confirmations.  Then after each 2016 blocks it will adjust.  So there should be windows of time that blocks are found quicker than 1 every 10 minutes.  At least until we get the bulk of the ASIC on the network.

I guess it might not even be that noticeable, but its a thought.  What are your thought's or expertise?

Other benefits which are partially or fully realized:

- Botnets - haha, they'll barely make pennies now, so they'll move onto something else
- being able to hear things in your house (assuming you haven't lost your hearing from 100 fans at 100%)
- not having a 100F/38C house even when AC is running all the time
- not having to worry about electrocuting kids, cats, dogs with 25 open mining rigs
- not having to wait until a pool goes offline to use your microwave or hair dryer
- reclaiming 1700 sqft of your house from the evergrowing hashing Borg

If faster confirmations were universally accepted to be a good thing we would decrease the block time.

Disclaimer: I believe faster confirmations would be a good thing, but recognize that others don't.
