Title: [Vote finished] Bitcoin Slogan / Tagline
Post by: phelix on February 25, 2013, 09:26:48 AM
I would like to create a poll for our favorite Bitcoin slogan. Please post your suggestion. I will set up a poll (maybe with two rounds should there not be a clear winner). Keep in mind it should work with people not familiar with bitcoin.

EDIT 2013-05-06: NO MORE NOMINATIONS! MAKE YOUR OWN POLL IF YOU WANT MORE ;)

EDIT 2013-03-01: FROM NOW ON NEW SUGGESTIONS WILL NEED A +1 BEFORE I WILL ADD THEM TO THE POLL

There are plenty of ideas here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=46247.0

there comes to mind:

Edit 2013-03-13:

Procedure:
Phase 1: Nominations only
Phase 2: Poll started, still open to nominations
Phase 3: Late nominations need +1 from someone else
Phase 4: 0 vote suggestions removed
Phase 5: 1 & 2 vote suggestions removed
Phase 6: 3, 4 & 5 vote suggestions removed

The idea behind all this? As the poll system of this board does not allow a ranked vote I had to enforce some aggregation. I did this by removing suggestions that clearly would not win so that voters were urged to recast their vote.

Y U get to decide?
I tried to make a fair poll. If you don't like it make your own.

There are plenty of ideas here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=46247.0

I read through that thread and a couple that I think would potentially spark interest in those unfamiliar with bitcoins:

From casascius: "You Asked For Change, We Gave You Coins"
From btc_artist: "Bitcoin -- Of the People, for the People"

Other ideas:

"Bitcoin: Your change has arrived" (a variation of casascius' "change" theme)
"Bitcoin: The money of the people, by the people, for the people" (a variation of btc_artist's Gettysburg theme)
"Bitcoin: The new paradigm in money"
"Bitcoin: The people's bailout" (my personal favorite)

I like the first one from the other thread.

"Using Bitcoin does to the big banks what e-mail does to the Postal Service."

http://m.ibtimes.com/u-s-postal-service-first-class-mail-donahoe-congress-214545.html

Quote
"We simply need fewer facilities to process less mail," Megan Brennan, said chief operating officer of the Postal Service.

The postal service has experienced fast decline in First Class mail due to the Internet, as more people use e-mail and online bill pay instead. In the last five years, for example, First Class mail volume has dropped 25 percent. Single-piece first class mail -- letters and such sent with a stamp -- has declined 50 percent in the past decade.

I have been known to have a creative idea now and again.  How about:

  • Like Cash, only better!

    Cash 2.0  or money 2.0

    digital cash - simple!

    Money Made Better

If you are looking for a tagline, I would have thought it needs to be a positive message to grow usage rather than to push an ideological idea which may do more harm than good.

Its not that its a bad ideology, its just that an idea which isn't put into context will get a life of its own.  That is where forums become useful! ;)

The slogan should be short and easy to understand for everybody around the world. Also it should transport a positive... vibration.

We have been working on creating positive media attention and on getting people and businesses interested in Bitcoin here in Berlin for almost two years now.

From this experience I can say that there is precisely one idea that seems to catch everybody right away and makes them go like "Wait! What?!" and that is the idea of a world without banks. The following three catchphrases have proven to gain almost everybodies immediate attention when I was talking to people:

- Banking without banks. -
- Say goodbye to banks! -
- Unbank yourself! -

(the first one even made it to the frontpage of a greek newspaper.)

Everything else takes a lot longer to inspire people. It seems that the outlook of being able to do business without using banks or to rid society from the banks alltogether is an idea, that unites about everyone on the planet these days.

Regards,

Joe

It's a nice double entendre that those in the BTC will understand immediately.
As a side benefit it'll probably be attractive to socialists (which if they buy into Bitcoin would actually undermine their statist goals!)

I don't get it. Is it a modification of something popular?   Is it a play of words: cryptography/many people??

A 2011 forum discussion (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4994.40) covers some of the layers of meaning. I'm probably not adding anything to the discussion, but here are the layers of meaning in my mind, and I like them all:

  • So, "strength in numbers" is a commonly used phrase in English, and although I'm no Latin scholar, the fact that the Latin phrase shows up in a bunch on Google search results suggests to me that it's a pretty old expression. Kudos to the wonderfully terse Romans. If they said it, it must be true.
  • Cryptography's utility is due to mathematics, so we can consider the "strength" of cryptography to be due to "numbers" (okay, that's a little simplistic for a crypto definition, but simplicity and double entendre are what's nice about the slogan).
  • A currency's utility is partly due to the number of people who accept it, so we can consider the currency's "strength" to be due to "numbers" of users.
  • Bitcoin's utility is based on both the strength of cryptography and the size of the user base, so its "strength" is due to "numbers" both ways.

My only change to the slogan would be to write it as "Strength in Num฿ers".

I think its an exceptionally clever tagline, but I don't like it - its got a feeling of socialism and slight intimidation about it!

That my just be my UK background, and I'm sure it was a tagline used by one of the big unions here!

This is true. But seeing as how socialism has steamrollered over free societies over the last century, maybe there's a couple of things they're doing correctly.

To be sure, strength in numbers is a good thing when the numbers associating are doing so on a voluntary basis.

With all these slogans against banks and revolutionary slogans I wonder if everybody is aware that Bitcoin will NOT solve all problems, especially not by force. Bitcoin will make rich people richer and also there will be Bitcoin banks.

Agree. The latin is neat for coins and even for t-shirts and whatnot but I think the primary form should be the English one.

Though an interesting way to stress the international aspect in some circumstances would be to have it listed in many different languages. Perhaps a new thread if it's accepted?

I still think it's the best slogan @phelix and you didn't even read the question on Rugatu, people have voted what they wanted, see their answers if you don't believe me. It could be that it got more attention from Rugatu than bitcointalk.

OK I looked through the Rugatu posts and to me it is quite clear that while you certainly drove traffic here you also influenced people heavily. I estimate about 15 votes influenced votes for your slogan.

This is the best comment: "(Did that more from the money than from a personal choice, but, personally, I don't care)."

I'm pretty sure "In Math We Trust" would work better than "In Crypto We Trust" because the average person doesn't know what crypto is, but already associates math with concepts like reliability, correctness, and objectivity.

It's all conjecture unless we test it with focus group studies, but I don't think people have negative associations with math itself as much as that have negative associations with studying math.

People don't use phrases like "mathematical precision" in order to evoke negative associations. That tells me that people trust and value math, but hate doing it themselves.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about "In Numbers We Trust" is Mark Twain's quote about statistics.

You got it all wrong.

It went like this:

Phase 1: Nominations only
Phase 2: Poll started, still open to nominations
Phase 3: Late nominations need +1 from someone else
Phase 4: 0 vote suggestions removed
Phase 5: 1 & 2 vote suggestions removed
Phase 6: 3, 4 & 5 vote suggestions removed

The idea behind all this? As this poll system is quite simple and does not allow a ranked vote I had to enforce some aggregation. I did this by removing suggestions that clearly would not win so that voters were urged to recast their vote.

If I could assure secure voting I would bet a couple of BTC that your suggestion would not win especially as there is a very well received similar alternative. Still I think adding it now would only make things more complicated.

Doing for money what the internet did for communication

This.

Simple and any idiot can understand it whether they know about tech or not. it also brings to mind(at least for me) the positives about the internet and where we were before the internet and where we are now that we have it. it also avoids any silly gimmicky names or titles that people commonly associate with random companies they dont care about or trust.

to me it says "this product is the most amazing thing since the internet, and if you know the good thats come from the internet then you can only imagine how good our product is".

It's not easy to keep everybody happy and still make progress while keeping things casual. Sorry your suggestion was only up for two days. It was a late nomination. I still don't think it has a chance but I put it back in. Hope you are happy. If not please make your own poll so you get to be Chief Corporate Identity Officer and I get to rant.

Please note all this can only be a casual vote as it can be too easily influenced.

I know Im bringing up an old thread, but I wanted to avoid a rehash of this topic by creating a new thread.
Anyways, Im tryin to come up w/ an extremely catchy slogan for a car window sticker.
Many of the ones in the OP are great and they are all in for consideration.

The one Ive come up w/ thus far is "Bitcoin, cuz banks suck!"

Im looking for something that would grab the average joes attention immediately, yet encompass bitcoin at the same time and from that create genuine curiosity.

Let me know what you guys think or if can come up w/ additional ones that would be appropriate for car window sticker. Thanks!

Not sure if you're still looking for one but I thought of this the other day.

Once you understand bitcoin, you get it.

Not too flashy, but might get their gears turnin'.

Far too many people are incapable of "being their own bank" so take that one off the list.

That only leaves one option in the poll I believe.

99% of users are incapable to read sourcecode.
Still, being FOSS is an advantage for everybody, and there are enough people who will refuse closed source software altogether in some situations. Think encryption software for example.
