Title: A friendly reminder backup your Google Auth
Post by: anonymousx on May 18, 2016, 10:11:50 PM
I just bricked my phone and it will need a full flash and wipe, guess what I never backed up Google auth and therefore I have lost ability to withdraw from most sites I am registered in, the total loss is about 0.25 BTC and the potential loss is endless as I have lost also access to my Gmail, if I logout of this pc, never back in.

I have a very old Auth backup when I did a nandroid backup like a year ago, and it doesn't have the important stuff that I recently peered.

I don't know about iPhones but my phone is android, and I will give the following advice to people who don't know.

- Root your android, install titanium backup, backup Google Auth + Data and take it out of the phone and encrypt it somewhere, do this every time you add a new site to Google auth, believe me it's worth it, you can unroot your phone every time and continue normal operation in case you are scared of being rooted.

- Take a note of the hash keys under the QR code when you are peering with a site on Google auth, write it in paper and save it somewhere, make sure to get the correct caps.

- There is a less secure but good option it's called Authy, authy have the ability to save your auth keys online and is compatible with Google Auth codes, use it because from now on I will start using it.

Final advice being so much paranoid will just lock you out of your own money and account, if you are paranoid at least do it right.

If this advice was helpful you can donate to me here, alghough its not important as it's not the reason why I am posting, I just had this feeling, and it sucks, and I would like people to not fall into it.

Last advice, if auth or this kind is unknown to you, go read about it, if you think it's too complicated than yes it is, its really complicated when you lose your phone or brick it, if you don't know how to back it up don't even use it, although I think pen and paper can be so easy.

Sorry for your loss. Same thing happened to me a year ago. Been using Authy for awhile now and it has been really good as it backs up your account automatically.

Sorry to hear about your issue. Could you use backup codes?

Wow I didn't know that existed thank you very much, but in the past 2 years I have moved to better 2fa solutions than google auth.
