Title: Maybe a way to verify yourself?
Post by: jaydipmodhwadia on June 09, 2016, 07:41:17 PM
Hi,
My new idea is that members who want to verify themselves to prove that they are legit can do so with the assistance of the admin and ID? this way, you get a tag under your name to prove you are verified and that can help should you try to run off?

PS i would be willing to verify myself if its allowed.

Problem is having the scammers ID hasn't proved useful on lending sites like BTCJam. On BTCJam many scammers used their own ID, but they could also use stolen ID's. It would only create a false sense of security and probably lead to more people getting scammed.

The only way to truly be verified is if I come to your residence, and verify that you are who you claim to be.
IDs, IPs, Passports, or any form of identity paper work can be faked.
Nothing can be relied upon except physical real world verification.

But of course, who am I to verify you? Now I need someone to verify me and so on.

Either way, verified or not, people can still run off with others funds.

1) Why should admins verify you? It will only add to their headaches when disputes arise
2) Identification is no help if you do decide to run away.

It would be abused and have one more thing mods/admins have to do.   And I think it would be all for nothing.  Even being verified people are willing to scam/default BTCJam is a perfect example of that.  Some just don't care what their online name brings up.   So verifying a scammer.... he is still a scammer.

Also photoshop will make this pretty hard as people will submit fakes. And what if a verified user defaults or does not provide the item sold?   It is still going to be hard to get money back.

The trust system is best we can really have. It allows you to track a user if they have done deals in past, and escrow.  I think escrow beat's this system by far it put's a known middleman to make sure deal is real.   So I think with trust and escrow all the tools are already there we need to have successful trades.  Getting verified sounds like a lot of work for very little actual gain.

This is never going to happen. If staff don't moderate scams then we're not going to start veryfying IDs. It would only facilitate more scams anyway when people start trusting others just because they're apparently 'verified'.

Stolen ID and fake IDs are not uncommon especially around online sites that requires verification. Being verified should not mean that one user is more trusted over another and it is impossible for admins to keep track of a high request. Account selling is still very prominent on this forum. People can easily start selling their account.

Bitcoin is designed to be pseudonymous and I feel that Bitcointalk should also be following this.

IMO, the trade history would be a much better option.
