Both two site have option to trading with Bitcoin to Ether. I am using these sites for long time. Still don't face any problem. You can use this site very easy and for your first trading. From what I know shapeshift has higher than usual transaction fees. I use Bittrex for cryptocurrency trading and it's a really solid exchange on which you can easily exchange BTC for ETH with a 0.25% fee. But I believe other bigger exchanges like BTC-E, Poloniex, and BitFinex are just as easy and have lower fees. Just pick one, currently BitFinex is the largest. Their volumes are gargantuan and it's a solid exchange. If you're depositing and withdrawing more than $2000 worth I think then you need to get verified.
