I've bought a new video yesterday for mining - Asus 6950 1 gb Direct CU II. After a few changes in my case improving the airflow, the temp. is very high. At 900 mhz core, 300 mhz memory, 100% fan speed , 1300 rpm front case fan and 900 rpm rear, at closed case the full load temp is 80 C (it was above 100 C before the changes). At open case it drops to 74 C. Is there any way to improve this temperatures and are they normal at all? It's very noisy too. Please for your comments. Mind you DUST and other debris is also bad for your computer pieces, so if you plan on keeping it open, keep it neat, tidy and above all, clean.

If the air entering the case is not cool, then heat absorption will be limited. You may want the more powerful fan to exhaust, that way the internal pressure will be lowered, enabling the weaker fan to push more into the case. If you can.. have the exhaust near the top of the case, and the input lower. Also setting the case on it's side can help with video cards, since heat can get trapped under the board if the card does not vent out of the case slots. (Like the DirectCU.. which vents into the case.) First I removed the cooler and replaced the thermal paste with some AS5 and gained almost 10 degrees Celsius but it was still hot and loud, so I removed the shroud and the fans and slapped 2 x 120mm Scythe Slipstream 1200 RPM fans on the heatsinks.
Now I'm mining at 75 degrees Celsius case closed @ 930 gpu clock and 393 Mhash. Title: Re: Asus 6950 1 gb Direct CU II overheating Post by: dikidera on June 13, 2011, 03:42:23 PM At 100C core, you probably have done some damage to the VRMs which are what makes your card work and manage overclock.
+1 for damaging your card. 90% of miners overclock their cards without taking into consideration the VRMs Title: Re: Asus 6950 1 gb Direct CU II overheating Post by: darkskypoet on June 14, 2011, 08:39:28 AM What are you running for voltage on that? have you changed it over stock? or does it come higher then stock from ASUS? My 6950 XFX 1 GB runs a paltry 71 degrees at 840, with fan at like 85% If I drop fan down to mid to high 50s then temp hits 80ish... Perhaps you've got a bit too much voltage there?

I took off the heat sink and this is what I found?! http://i51.tinypic.com/r25k5z.jpg Notice how two of the heat pipes dont even touch the GPU! Also the surface is far from flat. Once again Asus have failed on the thermal paste, it was dry and not spread correctly. I cleaned it off put some MX3 and now even when over-clocked to 940 MHz my GPU temp is 72C ! Even with the case closed. Same thing happened to my Asus motherboard, chipset was overheating. Took off heat sink and there was a couple of little dots of thermal paste. |
