Title: Why are bitcoins so hard to purchase?
Post by: MJ on March 21, 2013, 10:45:47 AM
Im a Canadian currently in Asia.  I keep trying to find out how to wire money to my mt gox account.  Some of the methods are restricted to russian, americans and brazilians.  Others require you to go to walmart to wire cash that way.  I dont have those options.  Can a canadian please help me on this?  I cant believe there are more streamlined ways of buying these things...

Thanks

fiat currency is the problem, not bitcoins ;)
if bitcoins would be global currency accepted in all stores, you would have 0 problems.

you could try a wire transfer to bitstamp.net, unless you want to spend 2 millions USD and their liquidity is not good enough for you.

Like why cant I use my credit card or paypal account? Why do I have to jump through hoops just to credit my account.

Ill look more into the localbitcoins but the issue with this is that I have to pretty much meet the seller in person.  What's more, there arent sellers in the asian city im currently located.

Im surprised more payment solutions to exist!

The simple answer is trust.
Paypal and credit cards transactions can be canceled or faked while the bitcoin transaction cant.
the only way is an irreversible transaction - cash/wire-transfer for example

It is because credit cards and paypal are not good money compared to bitcoins. And no one wants to sell bitcoin for paypal and cc. And those reckless sellers that do get burned by their stupidity rather quickly.

You can always find people selling on ebay, dispite the risk of a PayPal charge back.

Bitcoin exist exactly because the current system SUCKS. If we already had a good system wich allowed us to easily buy everything without problems we would not need bitcoin  :D But since the current methods all sucks, this is why bitcoin is growing so much!

That's basically it, if you're actually interested in just acquiring Bitcoins for the sake of preserving your wealth and you don't really care too much about profit taking I'd recommend spending some money on a mining rig if you can't find a way to buy it with fiat. You can bet that soon enough when they start to understand it governments will start persecuting people who want to buy Bitcoin as much as possible.

It's difficult in the UK too, unless you want to pay marked up prices on localbitcoins.com... a proper UK exchange is sorely needed!

BitBargain is good. Initially I was put off buy having to having to buy bitcoins from Private sellers from the site.  But doing a bank transfer was straghtforwards

Yes that sucks. I'm also currently in a place where there's little chance of buying.

But lucky me, in a trip to the US, I opened a bank account.

I can't sign up to Dwolla or any other site that requires a US address, but I was able to buy at Coinbase.

I'm a Canadian and recently helped a friend by quite a few Bitcoins from VirtEx (a Canadian exchange). They have a variety of methods for getting Cdn $ into an account but not credit cards or paypal.

I would consider the barrier to entry a bonus for the time being. When it's really easy everyone will be in it.
