Title: Bitcoin Prevents Global Warming
Post by: bb113 on March 21, 2013, 03:46:53 PM
Ever since the Gox hack there has been a significant negative correlation (p<0.05) between BTC traded on Gox and temperature anomaly. The temperature data is only available up to January 2013. The outlier on the chart is December 2012.

You got it all wrong.

Everybody knows that the lack of pirates causes Global Warming.
With Bitcoin came 40 Pirates or so.
And that reduced Global warming.

Competition will drive mining to be run in appliances that emit heat anyway, i.e. in central heaters, hot-water systems etc...

That together with a merge-mined distributed global admin-less key-value store owned by "no one" potentially corruptible and that can be used for a variety of purposes, and no one can say that this mining thing does useless work.  :)

Positive correlation: Bitcoin mining causes temperatures to rise six months later.

When it's cold people stay at home and trade bitcoins to beat the boredom?

Pretty soon the E.P.A. will ask US bitcoin miners to have a coal license or be shutdown.

Well I didn't look directly at mining. If someone has that data itd be interesting if they did. So far it appears that bitcoin is good for the environment.

Positive correlation: Bitcoin mining causes temperatures to rise six months later.

The current correlation is pretty good, I didn't even drop outliers and homogenize the volume data yet.

Are you questioning the Toshipogenic Global Cooling consensus?

Lately, NASA has shown us that global cooling has been around for about 6 years now. And the rate of warming has been dropping since back in the '90s. The only thing that might happen is that governments might want nuclear wars so that the bombs increase global warming... to save face.

lool... I've heard both versions. Some say Bitcoin and digital currency mining in general are very bad for global warming and it is helping to speed up the process, while others say it prevents it??? damn...

I guess the title should be: Bitcoin Helps Global warming.

As far as we know, cryptocurrency mining releases a lot of heat. all this heat together will certainly have a negative impact over time... So, logically, mining is an added dose to the whole global warming problem

no, again: Bitcoin Mining will in the long-term only be worthwhile where the waste-heat can be used. And you will only mine only to use the waste-heat, not 24/7, and not for profit, but only to get some crypto-coins back for your energy bill.

PS: Fiat currencies are backed by proof-of-force through the military-industrial-oil-big-finance-complex which directly and indirectly accounts for probably more than 50% the world's energy consumption.

Yes you are quite correct. Miner uses fan to release the temperature off the hardware which will ultimately go to the environment and also what about the broken hardware that go to trash.
