Title: Futures market for bitcoins
Post by: gmk80 on June 12, 2011, 02:34:32 PM
Is there something analagous to a futures market for bitcoins? So that I could, say, contract to sell bitcoins in September for $25, or buy them in December for $20?

This would take some of the volatility out of the market, and reduce the risk for a miner who wants to buy a bunch of rigs, but wants to hedge his future revenue to match his capital investment in case of a market crash or to offset the volatility.

Apparently http://bitoption.org is a futures market, albeit a nascent one. Good to know.

Like the previous reply said, the answer is yes. There's no volume, and almost nobody participating in that market right now. It's a bit premature. Perhaps it will see adoption in the next few months, but for now, it is indeed nascent.

FYI, I'm working on a real futures contracts exchange. It's in the stage of active development, but takes time. I will post the progress occasionally on the forum. Also testers will be needed to test the market. If anyone is interested - please let me know.

Update: https://icbit.se/ - the futures market is now live, welcome!

GLBSE has the option to trade futures. Talk to Nefario more about it. He is the creator of that site. Also a mod here. Very well trusted. Very helpful person.

Also, while it is much harder, you could just make a PGP (or gpg?) signed contract in #bitcoin-otc. I would highly suggest the first as GLBSE does add some legitimacy.

I'm meeting some people tomorrow who run a "prediction" site locally who are thinking about adding BTC to their site.  They are licensed as a futures market/trader so could do it.

bitoption is for options, not futures. And yes anyone who wants to start doing futures on GLBSE I'll help out as much as possible.

Nefario.

Some friendly advice  ;)

Before going into Bitcoin Futures, always learn the ropes of traditional institutionalized investing.

I wrote a quick blog post to help understand what Futures are and how this works for Bitcoin
