Title: [PRE-ANN] Monero Qt GUI, cross platform full XMR node.
Post by: monerol on September 22, 2016, 07:20:30 PM
I started discussion on Reddit, this is crazy and strange there, so i will start it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/53zlmw/monero_qt_gui_wallet_is_ready/

New Monero Qt wallet preview video https://sendvid.com/3fxx9asd# (https://sendvid.com/3fxx9asd#)

So. Monero GUI wallet is ready. Qt. Full XMR node. Linux, OsX, Windows.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/53ip1h/making_xmr_gui_i_want_to_start_fund_raising_guide/

It is based on https://github.com/cryptonotefoundation/cryptonotewallet as i said before.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/53zlmw/monero_qt_gui_wallet_is_ready/d7xu26f
Whats wrong with you people? I just don't get it. It's crazy. Whats up with this community? Shame on you. Monero has no good GUI, just the fact. The thing i saw at https://github.com/mbg033 is just another RPC thing.
I forked https://github.com/cryptonotefoundation/cryptonotewallet and adapted it to Monero. Of course you should not trust any software before exploring source code, of course I don't ask for a single penny before everything will be verified and i will answer all questions about new GUI wallet. But did i provided binary or source code? No. What dragons? Dragons in video I provided with compiled wallet, working on Ubuntu 14.04 version? Are you kidding me? Look, there is nothing special about that. Monero need to have the GUI for ages as i see from topics history. Not RPC things to connect to simplewallet. There is a fundraising for Monero GUI, guy who is making new GUI https://github.com/mbg033 provides another RPC based solution. Instead I provide simple and well known Bitcoin alike Qt wallet. Single cross platform binary: wallet + ful monero node. Yes, I run pool, iIdon`t own that f**cking monero domain, moreover, I will move my pool from pool.monero.org subdomain asap. It's crazy.

EDIT: New Video of wallet building https://sendvid.com/x5pb1n3l (https://sendvid.com/x5pb1n3l)

I can show source code to trusted dev, this is not a problem if only he will promise me in public that he will not release the same wallet after observing source code.
One again, my intentions are clear i want to provide good GUI wallet and receive developer donations, because i can see 14000 XMR funding for GUI wallet that is another RPC thing.

You may try to use Steemit (https://steemit.com) for the fundraising  :)

It would be in Steem Dollars (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/steem-dollars/), but does it matter?   ;D

I love the QT that you came up with.... open it up for the core devs to review and give there blessing and I'm sure it will be embraced by the whole community...  I personally love the simplicity of the QT wallet over all these new flashy wallets!!

+1 think it looks great!

kudos where kudos due, now just a checkup if everything is ok and we're good to go...

https://forum.getmonero.org/9/work-in-progress/2476/the-official-qt-gui-project

1. The 14k was liquidated into fiat immediately because Ilya's payments are denominated in fiat currency
2. It's not "another RPC thing", Ilya has written an API he hooks into from scratch: https://github.com/monero-project/monero/tree/master/src/wallet/api

Beyond that, this entire story, the domain sale, you being the only person able to communicate with the domain owner, etc. is all so insanely fishy that I can't believe it to be anything but a setup or a scam. If you're genuinely just a developer who is so good that they managed to do all this work in a few days then the onus is on you to prove it.

You forget that we've worked on this for 2.5 years, and many of the contributors and developers and Core Team members who have worked unpaid on it have a stash that is smaller than 10k XMR. Coming in here and demanding that amount of money for a few days work is simply insulting to the people that have made Monero what it is.

In addition to that, open-source development never works in a "pay first deliver code later" manner. If you want to get paid then release the code, and raise funds afterwards, like every single other FOSS project out there. As it stands right now you are nothing more than a common scammer trying to leach off the community in deference to the people who have actually brought Monero to the point it is at today.

1. No comment.
2. Will there be a running simplewallet and monerod daemon and Qt wallet contacting both or just simplewallet? It seems to me Ilya wallet is RPC thing but with his own API. But no offence i didn't explored his code well.

I wanted to make pool, i wanted to buy domain, now i don`t  ;D There was not a problem to reach seller. But i  will move y pool out of monero.org domain.

I didn't know about years of your work, but Qt may be not your strong side. I am not open-souce developer. I am not asking for "pay first deliver code later" manner. The only thing i asked is to start new fundraising for new Qt wallet.
This was not a very hard work for me to add monero changes to cryptonotewallet Qt wallet, but it took some non-stop 24 hours of coding and understanding.
I wonder why you still call me a scammer. You have an official fundraising for Monero related projects, moreover you have an official fundraising for Monero GUI.
I asked to add my GUI wallet for fundraising, you answered with LOL. Rude and unpolite guy. After i uploaded proof video with compilled and working wallet (hardfork passed, wallet synced now) you have seen what happen. I don't know what to do and what to think about it.

Look, if you are honestly what you say you are, then the best thing for you might be to take this whole conversation offline. You're not going to get anywhere attempting to browbeat FluffyPony and the rest of the Monero community in public.

Start over .Contact FP privately. Ask for his help. Release the source code to one of the devs and then get permission to raise money through the funding system. Be reasonable in your demands. Your first demand - 10000 xmr - was just bloody stupid and offensive. For reference, another developer a few days ago, proposed a GUI for 200 XMR. And he made all the right moves in terms of the way he approached the community.

Best of luck.

Oh good, so we're in agreement that you don't "need" 10k XMR.

I can't decipher everything you've written here, but there is one thing I understood: you're wanting to get paid for "non-stop 24 hours of coding and understanding". Ok, let's start there.

Johnny_Mnemonic suggested you price it at the same USD value as the Qt GUI fundraiser (https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/53zlmw/monero_qt_gui_wallet_is_ready/d7xwrse), which puts it at 700 XMR at today's prices (29.17 XMR per hour if you literally spent 24 hours on this). This is in-line with moneromooo's per-hour price at his first fundraiser (https://forum.getmonero.org/22/completed-tasks/334/fund-a-developer-moneromoo-will-work-part-time-on-monero-for-260-hours-over-approx-6-months), and moneromooo has done more for Monero's development than you could ever do.

I think that 700 XMR is a fair goal, and I am willing to help you create you a Forum Funding System proposal to raise 700 XMR.

Agree with fluffypony 700 XMR is a fair goal, show the code to trusted developer, put a 700 XMR fund raising thread here and reddit after the dev verifies the code, then release the code to the public you and the dev who verified, the credit goes to you, believe me you will get lots of donation after you have launched the GUI wallet from ton of people including me :-)

1. 24 hours not counting time i spend to understand Monero when i established pool, not counting time i spend exploring there is no GUI and so on.
2. Monero wallet is not absolutely ready, like graphics and additional tests, so i will need more time before release, but source code can be verified now. As I said initially it will take approximately 2 weeks since my announce to make it ready.
3. Why not just to start fundraising campaign with the goals we will collectively decide and not to give a community chance to vote with their XMR?
4. I apologize, but 700 XMR seems unfair price for standalone cross platform Qt people were waiting for so long. I can understand 14000 XMR is an unfair price too and i hear your arguments about crypto-fiat conversion for Ilya. We should decide on reasonable
5. Lets not be rude or something, lets cooperate. I want to provide good opensource wallet, with easy verifiable source code (because this will be fork and you will see all changes) but indeed i want to receive donations for my work and also i will contribute to XMR development in future.

My suggestion is to start fundraising for my wallet with reasonable goals we can decide together, not 14000 XMR, but not 700 XMR too. You should understand that this software is very important for XMR and now it is a good chance to have it.

You may try to use Steemit (https://steemit.com) for the fundraising  :)

It would be in Steem Dollars (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/steem-dollars/), but does it matter?   ;D

yes it does matter steem dollars are ponzi BS... Steem is crumbling and has a terrible setup

No matter if it is ponzi or not if you still can get BTC (eventually) for your post  ;D
just post & get paid (https://steemit.com/jobs/@kencode/6wtzz-do-you-know-a-foreign-language-crowdvoting) - no investment needed (except some marketing & PR efforts  ;)

While your video looks nice, I would never start your wallet if it's not reviewed by XMR core team.
Then the fact there's no GUI wallet yet means that the core team did not find it important enough to be made quicker.
And if they don't find it so important, I don't see how would they give you 100k$ for it.

It's a nice attempt, but you completely missed the context, see?

So, if I'd be you, I'd take their offer. Do you know why?
It's another context you missed. I think that the wallet is "next in line" on the ToDo list, so they may release a wallet themselves this year and you may end up with no payment at all.

Good luck. You'll need it.

I don't think "the core team did not find it important" as there's  THE OFFICIAL QT GUI PROJECT (https://forum.getmonero.org/9/work-in-progress/2476/the-official-qt-gui-project)

My suggestion is to start fundraising for my wallet with reasonable goals we can decide together, not 14000 XMR, but not 700 XMR too. You should understand that this software is very important for XMR and now it is a good chance to have it.

So if 700 isn't enough, what is? 1000? 1500? Whatever you ask for is coming directly out of the pockets of the volunteers and contributors of a decentralized, open source project. There is no ICO or premine to bankroll your endeavor. I'm sure you can ask for quite a bit from companies with significant resources, but this isn't a company, and there are no resources.

You will get donations in excess of the initial 700 (if you manage to raise it), so please either take up FluffyPony on his offer or quit wasting everyone's time.

I just want a reasonable compensation, after all including moral compensation ;D
Do you really think GUI worth 7x wikipedia things or similar things, just check other fundings https://forum.getmonero.org/8/funding-required.

I suggest 5678 XMR  - 6789 XMR goal for fund raising now. Why not just to open it, if we will reach it everyone will be happy, if not, you don`t miss anything. Am i right?
So my suggestion is 5678 to 6789 XMR goal for fund raising.

I think you're being greedy, but here's my suggestion:

If we reach 5678xmr, everyone is happy. If we don't reach it, you get nothing, and you still release the sources. How does that sound? Still want to see how the community feels?

It's not my decision though. I thought FluffyPony was being too harsh on you at first, but now it's clear he was right and you're wasting everyone's time.

We do miss something. It's my understanding that if we don't reach your goal, the donations are just rolled into the general dev donation fund. That's all fine and dandy, except that some of us (myself included) prefer to fund specific work that we'd like to see expedited.

Does that make sense? It's in few people's interest to contribute to your proposal if it's unlikely to reach its goal. And it's in few people's interest to contribute to any proposal if the funding system habitually allows unreasonable funding goals.

I will be happy to make the GUI wallet for less than 100 XMR. I even think thats too much let alone 700 XMR....

Its not complicated at all. Anyone with some experience will be able to do it.

OP is being extremely greedy.

I am very tired of all of this. Lets find reasonable goals, ok. You say 700xmr is a reasonable for my proposal, ok, i will think.

EDIT: Please, think like i think of this. Chronological. Ive seen XMR GUI funding with 14000 XMR, asked to start funding for my proposal at the same place, i received LOLs and rude with no explanation, ive made GUI, and asked for funding again, received rude again, tried to understand why, after all eventually it was said to me that 14000 xmr goal was long ago (how should i know that? without your explanation), changed my mind and never claimed nor 14000xmr nor 10000xmr after that. Asked for funding again with reasonable goals. received rude again.

I can repeat again: I do want to provide GUI, I do want to opensource it, I ask for funding with reasonable goals like other proposals. You say 700 XMR is a reasonable goal, I think this is quite low compared to other tasks there, but ok, I hear you, I will think about that.  And I should finish it before release.

I am building https://github.com/mbg033/monero-core now to compare it to my GUI wallet, by brief source observe i believe this is RPC thing because of daemon RPC calls.

2. It's not "another RPC thing", Ilya has written an API he hooks into from scratch: https://github.com/monero-project/monero/tree/master/src/wallet/api

Quote from readme:

Code:
Before running the GUI, it's recommended you have a copy of bitmonero running in the background.

./bitmonerod --rpc-bind-port 38081

    Run the GUI client.

./release/bin/monero-core

Official New GUI connects to ./bitmonerod daemon and communicate with daemon with RPC calls? I think Yes. This I mean by "another RPC thing" because it connects using RPC. You should run ./bitmonerod or am i wrong?

"Unofficial" Monero Qt GUI transaction sending test - Video https://sendvid.com/g7pu9kbo
Funding is not the only reason i haven't released source code yet... It has few bugs when closing wallet and need more testing. All videos just show the basic functions to verify that i am really working on wallet.

I ask for a reasonable funding for such a great standalone wallet. 5678 was only my suggestion! Community suggested 700, i suggested 5678, we are getting closer and closer through all of this rude and disorder.  https://sendvid.com/g7pu9kbo

Now i have 2 bugs in this wallet:
1. When closing wallet it is not saved properly and you should resync wallet (not daemon) every time, that takes about an hour on my machine.
2. Is generates new wallet address and keys and now it is not compatible with monero-wallet-cli keys, must be some format differences.
So now you can generate new address and use it and not able to import your previous address, but i will fix it, but this will take time.
