Title: [FINISHED] ListenToBitcoin.com - music generated from realtime transaction data.
Post by: IntrepidMiner on March 31, 2013, 09:04:37 PM
I just finished this site, which generates music from realtime Bitcoin transactions and trades, pulled from Blockchain.info and Mt.Gox. Hopefully I put this in the right subforum ;)

https://i.imgur.com/bKGQCVb.jpg (http://www.listentobitcoin.com/)
http://www.listentobitcoin.com/ (http://www.listentobitcoin.com/)
Works with Chrome and Firefox (maybe Opera too.)

It's written heavily using javascript. Hope you like it, and I'd love to hear any feedback you have! There's also a Reddit thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1bdfvw/just_finished_listentobitcoincom_which_generates/) with some more info.

Thanks!

Awesome idea, love your concept. There's also another thread about your site at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=162724.0

Edit: Just donated and saw my own donation floating up in yellow :)

Absolutely stunning. Great work all around! The idea is fantastic, the execution is flawless, and there's a nice UI to boot.

Wow. I dig innovative concepts like this. Even tough the system has trouble connecting to blockchain.info at the moment, Good job!

i belive its the right catagory

I do have one question tho, why are some in BTC and then some in BTC/usd are the BTC/USD ones trades on mtgox? Also this includes ones that are btc/ some other fiat like JPY

Also for firefox seems that if switch tabs all the bubles get held up at the bottom of the screen until i switch over again. I still hear all the music just the visuals kinda freeze until i view it.Not sure if this was intended or not.

Lastly would be a neat feature todo colored bubbles for sizes of transactions or if its from a know/popular address, or like the donation bubble isntead saying mtgox or something. Just some ideas, cool site tho

By the way, why the choice for vibraphone sounds?

Favorite instrument I guess? I also had some inspiration from Tonematrix (http://tonematrix.audiotool.com/).

just thought of a great idea, You should add to specific addresses so for example http://www.listentobitcoin.com/1addresshere would do live streaming of transactions getting sent here

You should add a "semi-silent" mode where transactions to/from 1dice addresses are left out...  :D

I absolutely love this. Is it on a pentatonic scale?

Really nice! I have a couple of suggestions:

  • When two bubbles appear simultaneously, you can see that they go up at exactly the same pace. You could add a bit of randomization to the vertical speed so their movement is more real.
  • Pitch depending on logarithm of transaction amount, suggested elsewhere too.
  • You could arrange the notes so that they align with the chord of the last found block to achieve basic harmony. E.g. a new block is found and a C major chord is played, then the notes of the next transactions could be limited to C, D, E, G and A; next block arrives and a G major chord is played, after that the notes of the transactions would be limited to G, A, B, D and E. Then F major… endless possibilities here.
  • Regarding different instruments for different transactions, being able to configure this would be awesome. Even an on/off switch would be ok for me.
  • Big market orders on mtgox are a problem in the sense that they are obviously recognized from the rush of played notes. They could be grouped (not very aggresively) so that less notes are played.
Good work, and congrats for achieving HN #1!

Excellent work!

A few more suggestions.

1) Can you make the data source selectable, i.e., I might want to see only MtGox or Blockchain or both.

2) Can you color SatoshiDice transactions a different color, like green?

TIA!

Another "idea": from time to time a gentle gust of wind could make all the bubbles tend to move towards the left or right. Not an idea actually since it just happened naturally in my browser, and I liked the effect.

Another idea...for MtGox trades, color the bubble different if the trade happens at an all-time-high in any currency.

It will be fun to see the screen fill up with all-time-high bubbles. I am sure people will take screenshots and share.

Or just green bubbles when it's a buy trade and red bubbles for sells.

I second that. Some color would be nice.

Also, it might be more useful to put the trade price in the bubble instead of the trade value...

@IntrepidMiner: I like your recent changes. Keep up the good work ;).

+1. So I can close clarkmoody/mtgoxlive and keep just one websockets connection.

Had to post this one.  Biggest I have seen so far: BTC3046.70
And it reminds me of pink elephants on parade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_YfBvP1KPU), especially at 2:40 when he blows square bubbles!

Nicely done. The sounds reminds me a bit of a song called "Sinus" by the Swedish artist Paola.

Really nice. I like it much. thank you! :-)

Are you able to add a mode in wich the bubbles inplode in the blocks and the blocks are like stairs, that go in the deep. so you can see the shades of the entiere blockchain in the middle of the screen and the new block coming from the borders of the window and including the bubbles while slowly shrinking to the middle of the screen to the rest of blockchain and waiting for new bubbles and new block and so on? that would really look amazing. :-D

Works on Chrome for me, but it took a long time to connect.

And let me say, this is really cool.

The sound is great, and I bet I could listen to it all day while working. Although flipping to the page to see how big those deep tones are might be a bit distracting... ;-)

I can confirm that sound is missing on latest chrome/Ubuntu, while it works on firefox.

Feature proposal: my computer is not a high-end one and is fully maxed out when I watch the bubbles passing by. Displaying the page on a WUXGA monitor loads both my cores fully and starts stuttering after a while, so I end up opening it in a small browser window or even minimized to enjoy the sound of silence. Would it be doable to configure the display refresh rate, or at least reduce it to 1 fps?

Finally: anyone found more than one easter-egg?

2 things I would like to see

2 a spot where I can enter my address or a list of addreses so it plays a difrent sound when its money coming from me or sent by me

othere then that its cool  I would have loved to have to have herd the sound of the bitcoin crash a few days ago lol

simply brilliant idea.
decent, artistic and fascinating work )
this is THE way, which will attract more people to bitcoin... to anything new in general.

my suggestions:

would be fine to
* show exchange rates and let sound the direction => ie overall tone going higher/lower together with rates.
(loop increasing/decreasing in tones-range? in some way, not sure)...
then we'll get arty, absolutely incredible financial ticker :)
besides it will be very accessibility oriented.

* add an option to choose what to show in bubbles (amount/currencies/rates/anything/nothing in bubbles/nothing at all)?
that will make it even simpler and faster by preference, on slow HW or at heavy "traffic" there.

* and keep all that decent and beautiful as is :)
it's ya audio project at most as i see... as i hear.

already more than a great job. thumbs up.

Awesome job, i've been following your progress for a while. One suggestion might be to have red bubbles for sells and green bubbles for buys, atleast for mtgox transactions? Might be cool to have a real-time visual of what's going on in terms of buying and selling.
