Title: PCI expansion question
Post by: billU on September 29, 2016, 12:42:23 AM
Question.

I made a mistake when I purchased my first mobo (ASRock H97M Anniversary )for mining Etherium.

The description said 6 slots, and I thought it was 6 PCI slots. I purchased 6 GPUs, and now I am 3 slots short. Can I use an Ebay find, which is a
PCI Express to 3 or 4 slot USB adapter card to add the extra GPU's? Or do I have to purchase a whole new mobo, and start from scratch?

Thanks in advance.

It's past the 30 day return policy. I'd have to ship it back to the factory in perfect condition.

I was thinking of getting one of these from Amazon.

?

thats the wrong adapter. you would want pci to pcie adapter, like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815158190

not really worth it imo but you should be able to use them in the pci slots on that motherboard you have now. you would also need risers in a open build (ie no case) to run that as the adapter is 1/2 height and you would not be able to use a pc case.

it pains my heart to see posts like this.

If you do not even understand the basics of how a GPU fits into a mobo then you have no business trying this mining game.

Do yourself a favor and at least spend 5 seconds reading before you drop 2k to build a mining rig.

I have  a similar feeling.

First he gets the wrong mobo and it takes him more than 30 days to realize it. Now he wants to go radical and try to use
a PCIe splitter. Chances of success = 0.

I didn't check the specs of the mobo but I assume it has 2 x16 slots and probably a couple of x1. This is very usable for mining,
but more importantly for learning.

I want to believe that we've been fooled by a troll.
