Title: How attractive is free hosting? [GAUGE]
Post by: Ðire on October 20, 2016, 09:11:51 PM
Self-explanatory title. I am currently contemplating starting up a free hosting service for all you BitcoinTalkers. Applications would be necessary (no one likes abusers, right?) and frequent monitoring habits observed. From what I am thinking, it would be a limited, but quality, free hosting service; a way for you developers to have a private workspace, startups to get started with no investment, etc., and those of you who need something better, a custom plan would be available. But those details would be worked out in the future.

cPanel, of course.

So how does that sound? How many people would be interested in it? Let me know your thoughts and opinions.

Free hosting is pretty good for personal development. I have used http://BestHostFree.com before, though I have lately upgraded to their paid plan as they accept BTC as a payment method.

The free hosting market nowadays is already saturated with these offers. How about a free VPS offering?

That's awesome :)

It's a pretty good idea. But what will entice us to use you service over other services?

A free VPS provider would be very nice :)

Unfortunately, offering free VPS(s) would be significantly harder/expensive for me.

It's a pretty good idea. But what will entice us to use you service over other services?

Strict guidelines, but quality servers. None of that overselling, overcrowded free hosting servers that 99% of free hosts have. :)

You may make a polling for this, dude. but I think it's a good way. about the offering, a free VPS is so very taking a lof of the funds and very expensive.

Very true. That's why there aren't any free VPSes available.

So it would have full cPanel? All the goodies? No locked functions like most other providers?

I think free hosting plan will be good way to attract some members who will actually buy premium packages after testing for few months and what i don't like in all the common free hosting plan is they have lots of limitation on the type of sites we can run as well as they also don't have support to latest scripting language.

I like your plan to have quality free hosting and also paid hosting beneath it and i think this could get some success if you accept bitcoin (obviously) and have plans comparatively cheaper than other hosting where bitcoin is accepted. I have gone through several bitcoin accepted hosting sites and found their price is way higher for same thing which we can get from other hosting where bitcoin is not supported.

Op, if you can start free hosting project just do it, it seems like you already have necessary tools for it.
Don't just ask people, you will truly find out if Free Hosting was good idea when your project will go live.
Remember you will have to let people know about this project, some social media marketing, advertising on Bitcointalk is a must.

Yes. Full functionality of the basic cPanel will be available. Pretty much what one would get for payment with most hosts, except stricter supervision of what it's being used for.

I am planning to have limitations on the types of sites that can be run, but I will also support most scripting languages (e.g. multiple versions of PHP).

Okay, the project is well underway and beta phase will likely roll out in a couple days.

Still, continue to let me know suggestions and anything you may feel about it. Everything is considered and appreciated!

I might be interested in this as I let my previous portfolio/project blog site go a while back and have recently been looking for an extremely cost effective solution given my current circumstances. If you would, I'd appreciate it if you PM'd me more details about your service.

As a suggestion, I've only started looking into it, but I'd also be interested in a space where I could test building a python powered dynamic site, using something like Flask. Granted, this is mostly because I find Python easier on the eyes than PHP and think it might be an interesting experience, so it's not of any real importance, but maybe it could be an option you could put out there that could allow you to stand out from others.

The free hosting concept is nice. It will be helpful for Bitcointalker. I have already used https://www.000webhost.com/ for free web host.

Thanks; that's what I'm hoping! Unless 000webhost has revamped their servers and free hosting, I tried them out a couple years back and they were an example of overcrowded servers. Not exactly useful.
