Title: Are we living in a random Universe?
Post by: matt608 on November 23, 2016, 02:02:18 AM
If a Universe can come into existence randomly, then the chances of us being in the first Universe are incredibly slim, in fact there would be infinite universes if they can be born randomly. Therefore, if they can come into existence randomly, life and intelligence would have evolved before in a previous Universe. That intelligence may have developed the ability to create Universes, in which case we could either be living in another random Universe, or one created by an intelligence that evolved in a previous random Universe.

I made a video talking about this: :)

I think it's much more likely we are living in a computer simulation.

Well its likely that its just a theory till now .until and unless its. Proved u cant just say it that we are living in the parallel universe..kudoos :)

I suppose so. We're just monkeys roaming the earth with no purpose, right? Or is that what they want us to believe?

It is still a theory. I think our planet is like one of the sand in a beach. Time will tell what that theories can reveal someday. But for now, that theories can't help us but think deeply and explore more. Hope someday advancement in our technologies can help us prove that theories.

I think the universe is weirder than we can ever hope to understand.

I think it can be true.  There are two theories of a universe such as parallel universes and the possibility of an alternate dimension that we are incapable of viewing. These universes exist in correlation (or side by side) with our own universe but are unable to be detected as they remain in a realm outside our 4 dimensional one, space-time being the 4th dimension. I've read it here (http://solarstory.net/objects/universe#multiverse-idea). I believe that there are more than 4 dimensions in the universe, so it can be more universes than our one. And probably someday we would be able to travel beyond our universe.

dunno

I don't even know other universes

how can I compare and know if this or the other are determined or random?

I think we are living in a random universe where Bitcoin trading is only possible here.

Does it make my Bitcoins more valuable? ;)

We don't have any evidence of pure randomness anywhere. The thing that we call "random" is a form of probability that we use because of the complexity of the universe. We can't hope to track any but the simplest of cause and effect processes, so we use the idea of random. But our random is not pure random.

Pure random doesn't even make sense.

There is a lot of visible cause and effect that we use daily. In fact, science shows us that cause and effect is the basic mode of operation in our whole universe - as far as we understand.

The TV-series "Fringe" got a nice illustration of a parallel-universe. The universe was a copy of the first one, but due some different decisions the second universe was a bit different (some other buildings, different technical progress, etc.).

It's a nice thought and I can really recommend the series :)

I can't watch your video right now, but your arguments sound similar to the idea of us being in a simulation created by a super-advanced intelligence. Or even a simulation, within a simulation within a simulation... etc.

One issue with that idea (and yours) is that technology won't necessarily keep advancing at the same speed, and there's nothing to really say for sure whether such things could be possible.

As for Universes coming into existence randomly, well there is a lot of evidence for the Big Bang, but no-one really knows why, or how it happened. It could have been random, or it could have been created by some super beings - we just don't know. Similarly, we don't know what's beyond the observable universe.

Regarding the chances of us "being in the first Universe", well we don't know those either. You say they're incredibly slim, but we don't have any other data points (other universes) to study and find the probability. We could be in the first universe, we could be in one of a number of universes, even an infinite number.

One thing we do know, is that the universe, and space itself, is expanding at an accelerated rate. So it would seem that our current universe will probably die a heat death. What happens after that, again no-one knows  :D

I'll watch your video when I get a chance.

We don't have any evidence of pure randomness anywhere. The thing that we call "random" is a form of probability that we use because of the complexity of the universe. We can't hope to track any but the simplest of cause and effect processes, so we use the idea of random. But our random is not pure random.

You're delving into extremely deep philosophical questions here, the answers aren't as clear as you make out. No-one really knows for sure. While on the macro level, the universe seems to be deterministic, things get stranger when we observe things on a smaller scale.
For example a couple of things that do appear totally random are:

  • Radioactive decay
  • The collapse of the wavefunction in quantum mechanics

But we have no way of knowing whether they are truly random, or whether there are hidden variables that we haven't discovered yet, making them deterministic. We have similar problems with any test for randomness - if there are unknown variables, then how can we possibly incorporate them into our randomness test?

Not to mention a truly, 100% deterministic universe has compatibility issues with "Free Will", which opens another can of worms...

what do you mean by a random universe? there is only one universe where we are living . and it is not a randomly existed one.

What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad

There is only one infinite universe in which we exist. The soul comes to earth in the bodily shell to learn how to create, develop spiritually and of course learn how to earn bitcoins.

Nobody has found any evidence of something that is random in nature. Things appear to be random at times, simply because their complexity is so great that we don't understand the complexity. So, to make sense of them, we call them random, when they really are not.

The closes that we have come to random is some random activity that we appear to have created in the lab. This is not random, however, because we have created it.

Looking for something that is random might be fun. But the complete non-randomness of nature that we have found so far, suggests that random does not exist. So, looking for random in reality is a waste of time, except to juggle (exercise) the mental attitude with.

Everything operates by cause and effect. Nothing operates by random.

As for me, then everything goes on as usual. All life on earth has its own chain of consistency. Therefore, the whole randomness of the universe is excluded.

You probably already heard this: our world can be a sophisticated computer simulation that creates the feeling that we live in a real universe. Reality is simply a set of electrical impulses interpreted by our brain. We perceive the world not directly and not in the most perfect way. If we could see the world as it is, there would be no optical illusions, no color blindness, no tricks of any sort, allowing to mislead the brain. Moreover, we perceive only a simplified version of this sensory information. To see the world as it is, requires too much computing power, so that our brain simplifies it. He constantly searches the world for patterns and relates them to our perception. Therefore, what we call reality is only an attempt by the brain to process incoming data from the senses. And if our perception depends on this simplified information flow, it does not matter what its source is - the physical world or computer simulation that throws us the same information. But is it possible to create such a powerful simulation?

Can be true though. Our existense is still a mystery, where we really came from. The chances of our universe being created by another intellegence can't be discounted. What's scary though is what if we're the only ones living thing in this universe. No aliens, no othe life form. Just humans, other species and Earth. This scares me more than the random universe theory

Yes, no one knows by chance whether we live here or have created us. Suddenly they just watch us and laugh with us. This is sad. I do not want to be an experiment

Maybe it's not possible to predict how things will work out no matter how intelligent you are if a system is sufficiently complicated. In which case the bad things that happen are an unfortunate side effect of life and existence.
Maybe its not possible for there to be a perfect system of life without suffering. For example life might not even be able to exist if there are no contrasts in feeling, so maybe there have to be ups and downs.
Maybe we are evolving towards a perfect existence, but to get there we have to wade through some lower evolutionary states.
Maybe things are objectively perfect, because without any danger, challenges or surprise life might be boring (may be absurd given the extremes of suffering, and relative mildness of boredom)
Either way, random or not we are deeply connected to the Universe and all of life.

no..He gave us free will ;)

Who gave us free will? No one made us we just are because that's the way the universe works...

If we have free will do animals not? How about amoebas? when you observe them in a microscope they sure seem like they have free will. Moving around where they want and all.. The free will argument is false. Every form of life has this and its not because some super duper being gave it to us. It just is this way..

but i believe the universe we live in is different in other dimensions

Maybe yes we don't know either because we don't have enough information in this aspect..,,

But my answer is yes I think we eae living th a random universe we even know what is outside there ..,

One of my favorite topics) It's even frightening to imagine that our entire planet can be just a little ant hill in someone's universe ... and we are such little ants running around here, fussing around, trying to find answers to questions ;D

There is nothing accidental in this world. Our universe is also not randomly selected. It the most favourable conditions for man. In other universes, there are certainly too people.

More than likely, we all live spiritually in our own universe. Our universe looks just the same as the universe that everyone else lives in. But when our universe touches that of someone else, that's when we meet and communicate with them. Procreation is a temporary uniting of two universes, forming a third.

Perhaps our world for this and created, can the creators never found an answer to their question and decided to transfer it to us. It's almost impossible to prove that we live in virtual reality.
