Title: Chance game ~ Mining with CPU to <10% [serious]
Post by: panonym on April 10, 2013, 06:25:28 AM
Hi readers

Correct me if I am wrong, but basically mining is a lottery game.
The more high the difficulty is, the less probability there is to find the lucky number [to find a valid hash with the minimum number of zero in the beginning of it].

Trying to mine with 1Mh/s might make laugh many of you.
Yet, I wish to do something even more "useless".
I wish to mine using 10% of my CPU, or even 1% of it.
(until I learn how to set my GPU for the job, to NOT 100% also)

Is there a command line or a possibility to use only a fixed % of your hardware to mine?
Mining at 10kh/sec, that's still 864'000'000 picopicochance in a day to win 25BTC playing solo.

'might wait forever... or be freaking lucky!
Very unlikely, but not impossible.
That's a chance game. Not hardcore mathematics problem to solve.

I didn't success to find how to reduce the allowed %. 'goes straight to 100%.

there are 3 choices from top of my head.

1. you have to find a miner who has support for that (i dont know any but im not a miner)
2. you can try to find virtual machines which could allow how much CPU they will use
3. you can try to reduce process priority in windows for miner

its not what you want exactly but always something.

Well, solo mining with a CPU for a whole block could literally take years. Though with pool mining you could certainly mine a little dribble, as it is worth $230 right now and climbing you could still earn some cash. After ASICgeddon however CPU and GPU mining for Bitcoin will be dead.

Or start mining Litecoins, only hitting the GPU stage of development with FGPAs probably later on down the road. They work differently so CPU is still somewhat viable. I mined .5 LTC in a couple days with my i7 rocking about 30 KHash/s

Use threads. If your CPU has 4 cores, launch cpuminer with 1 thread to use 25% CPU. 2 threads to use 50%, and so on.

Yep, my i7's 4 cores are threaded to act like 8...though performance is still pitiful. It took me 3 days to mine .5 LTC

-w 4 is what worked when i tried it...

Why you would do that though, is beyond me.
