Title: Bitcoin Graphics in Vector Format (Illustrator)
Post by: bitboy on November 12, 2010, 01:14:51 AM
Ok, here are the promised graphics in vector format. You will need Adobe Illustrator CS3 to open the files. You can then modify to your heart's content. To convert it into bitmap format, I find it better to work on the graphics at the size originally created here due to effects and what not, and then paste it in Photoshop file as Vector Object, resize to the desired dimension, and then only you rasterize it. Hope that makes sense.

Feel free to host this files on your server. BTW, no attribution is needed.

- Right click preview image below to download the Illustrator file to your desktop

Bitcoin Logos - You will also need to download this font (http://font.ubuntu.com/) to open the file and type the text you desire.

Beautiful stuff, I sent a few coins.

Why do you want attribution? And how do you want it? "Graphics by BitBoy" at the bottom of every page?

No, you don't have to. I don't know how to go about releasing something under public domain. The above license was taken after the advice (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631.msg20122#msg20122) from Theymos. I thought that would be the most appropriate, after all the symbol was traced from the logo done by Satoshi.

And thank you so much for sending me the coins.

Oh, is there something to it besides saying "I declare this to be in the public domain!"?  :D I really don't know anything about it.

Hey Bitboy!

Nice work but I can't open it. You might not know this trick;

Print your work through the old Apple Laserwriter driver and capture the output to a file, use the eps extention.

That file will import into almost any vector graphics ap.

Another tip, when making logos and other drawings with very little text, convert that text to curves. It won't look any different, but it will greatly increase the chances that others can use it.

There’s a problem with mixing the Ubuntu Font with a derived work from Satoshi and then trying to PD it. IANAL, but they would get very grumpy over it.
Additionally, CC has created CC0 (CC zero) for public domain works beyond UK, US and other countries that dont have a concept of PD.

It would be best to have the BitCoin logo separate from the text, and licenced similarly to licence chosen by Satoshi if it has been traced.
Or you could ask him to declare his work CC0 so you could use it more flexibly.

Satoshi's released his logo as PD. The Ubuntu font can be used in PD projects (because you're just using its letter shapes as intended, not redistributing it as a font).

For all practical purposes, PD works well and allows the graphic to be used everywhere else. Just posting a message that says "I release this to the public domain" is fine.

It's only for major works that something more formal serves any purpose.

I can't replace any of the text because it seems to have been converted to outlines.

Ah, it wasn’t obvious from the thread that he had.
I’ll stick by my CC0 advice :P

Can someone export and upload as SVG's? Inkscape can't load AIs properly.

I completely agree. CC0 (http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/) is FAR FAR better than their Public Domain Dedication. I use it for all my creative works.

I have the SVG of the logos, but I could not attach the file. I got this message:

"The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator."

The file is 60KB.
The other images are by the way not properly exported by Illustrator due to poor support for effects like multiplication filters.

...CC has created CC0 (CC zero) for public domain works beyond UK, US and other countries that dont have a concept of PD.
If someone releases a work as PD in a country that does support it, that's compatible with CC0. You are free to relicense your redistribution of the PD work as CC0 (because the work is already PD, you can do anything you like with it). So the use of PD (where available) is never a problem.

This is very good -- many thanks!

Just two small remarks:

  • You misspelled "cryptocurrency" in one of the logos...
  • Could you also post the SVG version?  Note that SVG has become the de facto standard for 2D vectorial data.

I have addressed both the issues, thanks. You do have to test the SVG version (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/59597/BC_masters/BCLogos.svg) though, as I do not have a proper SVG app to test it, it was a pretty crude conversion and I do hope the file can be access easily on other apps or systems. Cheers.

And thanks for all the kind donations.

just a tip for you guys that use them, if you are noobs are vector graphics, size and edit them to your needs, then export to PNG, stay away from using them directly inside webpages and such, at least for the time being.

Came across this post by bitboy, awesome going.

I was working on some t-shirt designs for my new site and could not resist the temptation to do another take on the we/me love bitcoin work by bitboy. I just added my two bits. Incase anyone is interested in using this logo or idea, I could upload the original vector files and host it here and on my site also. Do give your comments.

Bitboy ,

Thanks for the svg's I messed around with them for a bit and came up with 2 variations on the same theme:

what do you think of this first one with the 'i' and the 'L' joined? Is it me or it is wierd? I am wondring if it is hard on the eyes?

Hi,

Glad to hear you find the SVG useful. Regarding your logo, the joined version doesn't really work for me. Perhaps, it would work if the joined element is of the same alphabet. So in this case, I prefer the normal "separated" version.

Cheers.

Did I use different fonts top to bottom?

With the name "Bitcoin Tool Store" you have so many possibilities.

Tools crossed with a Bitcoin logo behind them but still mostly visible.

A more industrial Bitcoin logo (screws or bolts in it)

Hex head bolts with the Bitcoin logo in them

Tools arranged in a circle around the logo.

Yes I am sure there is a lot more can be done. I am not the real 'creative' type, but I  know I do like 'clean' and am not a big fan of 'cheezy'. This design will likely get me going. Perhaps once I am up and running, i can look at fixing up the theme it a little.

I meant to say if the joint element is made of two "i". But obviosly it wouldn't work here because the bottom word is "tool" rather than something end with an i. That is just my opinion anyway. Hope this make sense.

Hi,

Are you using Windows? When you right click, do you see any options of "saving link file as…" rather than "saving picture as…". The former is the one you need to use in order to save the .ai file to your computer if it is there. Hope that helps.

Hi Bitboy,

I see a warning at the top of the screen about this being an old post, but I wanted to let you know how glad I am that I found these, and say thanks for posting them.

I'm in the process of building a bitcoin and crypto related blogging/informational/wannabe news site called ontheblockchain.net, and have been in need of a good "wallet" image to use on a page I have about bitcoin wallets, and this will work perfectly.  That one above the wallets with the falling coins is also really cool.
