Title: Search before you post? f**k that
Post by: greBit on April 18, 2013, 10:56:07 AM
I have complete sympathy for the new guys who endlessly re-create topics that have already been previously discussed to death, who are subsequently flamed for not having 'searched before posting'.

I hope that this is one of them.

The reason is that your search function is broken.

"An Error Has Occurred!
The last posting from your IP was less than 41 seconds ago. Please try again later."

What the hell? I cannot search more frequently than once per 20 seconds?

This site really is a throwback from 1997.

Search is a DDOS vector, it allows an attacker to easily consume web host CPU resources, so requests are time limited.

That being said, the search is really sub-par, it is what I would expect from HotBot.

site:bitcointalk.org blah

For clarification, type this into Google:
site:bitcointalk.org search sucks

There are some things that Google just won't work for though, such as searching just posts by one member or looking for certain phrases.

Actually you can do phrase searching in Google by enclosing the phrase in quotes.

Pretty sure other forums manage to make search functionality work without infuriating the user with arbitrary time limits.

I also doubt it would be that hard to link the forum search button to Google search if the webadmins have decided not to bother fixing the problem

Yep, Google search operators are awesome. Also, try their cache if you don't want your Ip all over the place.

Yeah, but other forums aren't the main discussion place for the 149th largest economy in the world.

Before this, and other CPU-saving measures were implemented, it was nearly impossible to use the forum at all, some days.

theymos should setup another server where search queries can be ran on a daily mirror of the database. We take daily backups, so it could even just extract from that. Then, add a checkbox to the search page that defaults to off that allows you to query the live database (at the current limits) when the box is checked, and query the daily mirror (at little/no limits) when it's unchecked.

That's not a bad idea.

Actually you can do phrase searching in Google by enclosing the phrase in quotes.

An example where you can't: try to find posts where the exact phrase "IP-address" has been typed by a forum user.

Bitcointalk search: ~75 results; Google (with +"IP-address"): About 6,440 results

Interesting. It's filtering out the "-". I haven't seen that before. Thanks.

Title: Simple Machines is a piece of shit

This site really is a throwback from 1997.

I would have to agree that Simple Machines is one of the most obsolete forum software packages.

Have a look at a modern one, developed by the creators of the StackOverflow family of sites. StackOverflow is not only f**king fast, the search is also smart enough to find similar questions, while SMF is dumb enough to only search for the keywords and not care about proximity or anything.

This modern, open source forum is called Discourse (http://www.discourse.org/):

I also hate it when you use the search function and you find only threads with the answer "use the search function!"

Well, then it's OK to post, starting with the sentence, "I searched, but couldn't find the answer."
